Conserving the peace : resources, livelihoods and security
Forest landscape restoration : building assets for people and nature, experience from East Africa

Forest loss and degradation carry a heavy human and environmental cost throughout tropical, temperate and boreal regions. In response, IUCN, WWF and various government and non-government partners have developed the Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) approach, which focuses on restoring the goods, services and ecological processes that forests can provide at the broader landscape level. While FLR is globally relevant, some captivating and interesting examples of restoration have come from East Africa. Three examples are highlighted in this booklet.

In preparation for WSSD, IUCN's international Task Force invited prominent experts from African civil society to meet together in Dakar. This publication in both English and French is the result of that meeting. Objectives of the meeting were to enable the representatives of African civil society to adopt a common position on issues relating to poverty reduction, environment and sustainable development in Africa, and to develop a plan of action on sustainable development in Africa to be circulated at the Johannesburg Summit.

Elasmobranch biodiversity, conservation and management : proceedings of the international seminar and workshop

The Darwin Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management project in Sabah held a three-day international seminar that included a one-day workshop in order to highlight freshwater and coastal elasmobranch conservation issues in the region and worldwide, to disseminate the result of the project to other Malaysian states and countries, and to raise awareness of the importance of considering aspects of elasmobranch biodiversity in the context of nature conservation, commercial fisheries management, and for subsistence fishing communities. These proceedings contain numerous peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the seminar, which cover a wide range of topics, with particular reference to species from freshwater and estuarine habitats. The workshop served to develop recommendations concerning the future prospects of elasmobranch fisheries, biodiversity, conservation and management. This paper records those conclusions, which highlight the importance of elasmobranchs as top marine predators and keystone species, noting that permanent damage to shark and ray populations are likely to have serious and unexpected negative consequences for commercial and subsistence yields of other important fish stocks.

This Occasional Paper contains the background information presented to participants at a workshop jointly organized by IUCN, FAO and TRAFFIC in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The workshop aimed to forge functional links among the various stakeholders concerned with the unsustainable use of wild fauna for food, and it contains the communiqué and a summary of the discussions related to problems and solutions.

The Hol Chan Marine Reserve Management Plan serves as a working document for the sustainable use and management of the marine resources in the area. This plan prescribes a zoning scheme that provides opportunities for the protection of specific natural features; for the maintenance of environmental services; and for tourism and fishing. It also prescribes a financial sustainability plan that could support the capital and operational expenses of the reserve.
