Biodiversity is increasingly regarded as a resource for rural development and organic agriculture as a production and marketing method that ensures a more productive future for our species and life-support systems. This publication contains the proceedings of a global gathering in May 1999 in Vignola (Italy) to discuss a declaration and action plan for linking together the organic agriculture and nature conservation movements. The role of organic agriculture in conserving biodiversity is not only linked to a substantial reduction of external inputs, it also encompasses agricultural systems that take local soil fertility and the natural capacity of plants, animals and the landscape as a key to successful production. Several experts from around the world describe research projects and case studies that illustrate the close connections between local crops and breeds, the ecological conditions of the area, the creation of new markets and the increasing consumer awareness of healthy products.

This regional session of the GBF brought together over 120 participants from 22 countries, ranging from indigenous comunity representatives to members of intergovernmental organisations. It was designed to feed directly into the deliberations of the CBD, in particular the discussion of SBSTTA (Jan-Feb 2000). Selected themes reflected key SBSTTA5 agenda items, and also highlighted regional concerns. Workshops included topics on sustainable use, the ecosystme approach to conservation, and alien and invasive species

Plant genetic resources are crucial for world agriculture, food security and the global economy. They are vital for the pharmaceutical industry and are important assests for developing countries rich in biodiversity. The patents and intellectual property rights (IPRs) associated with the development of new products are critical to trade in these resources. The relevant international agreements are discussed : the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); the World Trade Organization's TRIPS Agreement; and the Convention of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). The author provides the first full-scale account of how to integrate the requirements of the CBD into an equitable global IPR regime, taking into account ethical concerns, environmental and social impacts, technology transfer and traditional knowledge

    Jones, Steve

Steve Jones takes on the challenge of going back to the book of the millennium, Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species. Before The Origin, biology was a set of unconnected facts. Darwin made it into a science, linked by the theory of evolution, the grammar of the living world. It reveals ties between cancer and the genetics of fish, between brewing and inherited disease, between the sex lives of crocodiles and the politics of Brazil. Darwin used the biology of the nineteenth century to prove his case. Now, that science has been revolutionized and his case can be reargued using the twentieth century's astonishing advances. From AIDS to dinosaurs, from conservation to cloned sheep, bursting with anecdotes, jokes and irresistible facts, Almost Like a Whale is a popular account of the science that makes biology make sense. It will catch the millennial mood and tell all those for whom Darwin is merely a familiar name what he really meant. It exposes the Darwinian delusions which try (and fail) to explain human behaviour in evolutionary terms, and, while giving an up-to-date account of our own past, shows how humans are the first species to step beyond the constraints of biology.

    Krech III, Shepard

The idea of the Native American living in perfect harmony with nature is one of the most cherished contemporary myths. But how truthful is this larger-than-life image? According to anthropologist Shepard Krech, the first humans in North America demonstrated all of the intelligence, self-interest, flexibility, and ability to make mistakes of human beings anywhere.

This guidebook presents an innovative and thoroughly tested model for organizational self-assessment. The tools and tips in this volume go beyond measuring the impact of programs, products, and services. They integrate techniques of formative assessment, in which the assessment team becomes involved in helping its organization become more effective in meeting its goals. The tools and techniques are flexible, and the model can be adapted to any type or size of organization. Worksheets and hands-on exercises are included. This book will be of use to any organization that is initiating a process of self-assessment, internal change, or strategic planning. It will particularly appeal to heads and staff of research organizations, university administrators, staff of research-granting agencies, and academics and professionals in organizational development and evaluation.

This document reflects the main ideas of a joint production by the two Technical Co-operation projects "Implementation of the Biodiversity Convention" (BIODIV) and the "Tropical Ecology Support Programme" (TOEB), entitled "Tourism in Technical Co-operation." It addresses the planning and management of socio-economic benefits of tourism as sustainable development.

This consortium of five organizations is working to collect scientific evidence on wildlife and wildlife habitats. This report gives an overview of the findings, as presented to the Norwich Conference: Climate Change and Wildlife, in September 1999.

    Zerner, Charles

Based on the book "People, plants, and justice: the politics of nature conservation". It represents an attempt to articulate some of the insights, key themes, and unsettled questions linked to market-based conservation that are more fully explored in "People, plants, and justice."
