One threat to parrot arises from their attractiveness as "talking" companions to humans, leading to a high demand for trade that involves hundreds of thousands of birds annually on a global basis, and gives parrots a high monetary value. There is an urgent need to change the attitudes of both the many millions who keep parrots, and those who make billions of dollars in trading them. Neither group accepts responsibility for survival of parrots in the wild, and governments find it difficult to establish sustainable use regimes. Additional threats include hunting for food and above all, loss of habitat. This plan is designed to aid managers and researchers entrusted with the conservation of parrot species. It is as much an evaluation of conservation techniques as a set of specific recommendations for individual species

The family Cracidae is made up of 50 species of guans, curassows and chachalacas - large gregarious game birds, many of which have striking colours. They are important as seed dispersers, biological indicators of the environment, a major protein source for indigenous people, and for ecotourism. Nearly half the species in the family are threatened and several have been pushed to near extinction by wide-spread destruction of tropical forets and over-harvesting. This plan describes the natural history of cracids, outlining threats to the birds, and measures needed to alleviate these. Recommendations include research on status, distribution, effects of habitat disturbance and hunting pressure; assessments of cracids as biological indicators; education and communication programmes; the creation of new reserves; assessment of legislative issues

An overview of the relationship between trade liberalisation under the WTO and the requirements of sustainable fisheries management. This document provides a helpful reference for use in trade and environment issues. Using fisheries as an issue requiring urgent attention, it illustrates a range of conservation issues in the trade agenda including subsidies, eco-labels, and trade barriers.

The Vision for Water and Nature is the "environment and ecosystems" component of the World Water Vision exercise of the World Water Council. It represents the first meaningful attempt to fully integrate environment issues into the development of a comprehensive strategy for water resource management at the global level. The vision was developed by IUCN through an extensive consultation effort based on three thematic workshops on freshwater ecosystem management and social, economic and environmental security, respectively. Instead of considering the environment as one of many water management sub-sectors, IUCN's consultations led it to emphasise the crucial role of ecosystems as the basis of our life support systems, without which security cannot be achieved and sustained. The vision also proposes a plan of action to help us achieve the sustainable world we envision in 2025.

This compilation contains all key documents produced during the development of the Vision for Water and Nature, the environment and ecosystems componant of the Vision for Water, Life and the Environment for the 21st Century, generally known as the World Water Vision. Included are : the Vision itself, the discussion papers which served as the basis of each workshop and the workshop reports

A new millenium is a fine opportunity to reflect on humanity's relationship with the rest of life on Earth - its biodiversity. Are natural ecosystems and species essential to our own success? And are we destroying them? The answers lie within this unique volume. An essential read for environmentalists, businesses and students alike, this publication contains colour maps, tables and figures summarising the state of the planet. The background research and analysis make it an invaluable resource for reference or study

Biodiversity is increasingly regarded as a resource for rural development and organic agriculture as a production and marketing method that ensures a more productive future for our species and life-support systems. This publication contains the proceedings of a global gathering in May 1999 in Vignola (Italy) to discuss a declaration and action plan for linking together the organic agriculture and nature conservation movements. The role of organic agriculture in conserving biodiversity is not only linked to a substantial reduction of external inputs, it also encompasses agricultural systems that take local soil fertility and the natural capacity of plants, animals and the landscape as a key to successful production. Several experts from around the world describe research projects and case studies that illustrate the close connections between local crops and breeds, the ecological conditions of the area, the creation of new markets and the increasing consumer awareness of healthy products.

This regional session of the GBF brought together over 120 participants from 22 countries, ranging from indigenous comunity representatives to members of intergovernmental organisations. It was designed to feed directly into the deliberations of the CBD, in particular the discussion of SBSTTA (Jan-Feb 2000). Selected themes reflected key SBSTTA5 agenda items, and also highlighted regional concerns. Workshops included topics on sustainable use, the ecosystme approach to conservation, and alien and invasive species

Plant genetic resources are crucial for world agriculture, food security and the global economy. They are vital for the pharmaceutical industry and are important assests for developing countries rich in biodiversity. The patents and intellectual property rights (IPRs) associated with the development of new products are critical to trade in these resources. The relevant international agreements are discussed : the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); the World Trade Organization's TRIPS Agreement; and the Convention of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). The author provides the first full-scale account of how to integrate the requirements of the CBD into an equitable global IPR regime, taking into account ethical concerns, environmental and social impacts, technology transfer and traditional knowledge

    Jones, Steve

Steve Jones takes on the challenge of going back to the book of the millennium, Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species. Before The Origin, biology was a set of unconnected facts. Darwin made it into a science, linked by the theory of evolution, the grammar of the living world. It reveals ties between cancer and the genetics of fish, between brewing and inherited disease, between the sex lives of crocodiles and the politics of Brazil. Darwin used the biology of the nineteenth century to prove his case. Now, that science has been revolutionized and his case can be reargued using the twentieth century's astonishing advances. From AIDS to dinosaurs, from conservation to cloned sheep, bursting with anecdotes, jokes and irresistible facts, Almost Like a Whale is a popular account of the science that makes biology make sense. It will catch the millennial mood and tell all those for whom Darwin is merely a familiar name what he really meant. It exposes the Darwinian delusions which try (and fail) to explain human behaviour in evolutionary terms, and, while giving an up-to-date account of our own past, shows how humans are the first species to step beyond the constraints of biology.
