In the European Union methods of farm production in accordance with the demands of environmental protection and conservation of landscape are regulated by the European Council. Several Polish regional and national programs are planned, regarding mainly the protection of biodiversity on farmlands, promotion of organic agriculture, soil erosion prevention and counteraction, as well as the depopulation of agricultural regions. The development of organic agriculture in Poland depends on the possibilities for the sale of its products. The organization of farmers into marketing groups helps strengthen their market position

African elephant database 1998

The African elephant is the largest living land mammal. It once inhabited most of the continent, from the Mediterranean coast down to its south tip. This picture of elephant range today is one of scattered, fragmented populations south of the Sahara Desert. Estimates suggested that elephant populations had more than halved in several areas between 1981-87. Partly as a result of the controversy that surrounds the question of trade in ivory, there is a persistent desire for regular updates on the status of elephant populations, particularly at the continental level. The African Elephant Database is a computerised information system that stores population estimates and associated geographic information for the African elephant, Loxodonta africana. This new edition contains updates made available to the IUCN/SSC African Elephant Specialist Group during 1996-98. Where no updates were available, estimates and range information from the previous edition have been retained
African rhino : status survey and conservation action plan

The black and the white rhinoceros have become flagship species for international conservation. They are significant not only for the continuation of a major evolutionary heritage, but also as symbols for the protection of African savannahs. The battle for the survival of these species has been marked by some notable successes and sadly, many failures, and the situation is still critical. The international horn trade ban and the domestic bans imposed in most traditional user states have driven the trade further "underground", in some cases inflating prices and making illegal dealing even more lucrative. This plan is aimed at donors, government and non-government organisations, and all those involved in rhino conservation. It oulines the actions and strategies needed to catalyse support for these majestic animals, and help secure their future in sub-Saharan Africa. The overall conclusion is that, given the political will, stability and adequate field expenditure, rhinos can be conserved in the wild

The IUCN system for classifying protected areas distinguishes six management categories (I-VI). This publication aims to further clarify how they can be interpreted within Europe, in order to help protected areas managers and others concerned with protected areas to apply the IUCN system more consistently to ensure reliable categorisation and data gathering.

IUCN's Temperate and Boreal Forest Programme (TBFP), which is part of the broader IUCN Forest Conservation Programme, has identified Russia as a top priority for the development of a country-level program to promote conservation and sustainable forest management initiatives in temperate and boreal countries. As a result, a series of four participatory workshops were held across the country, examining the Russian Far East, Siberia, and European Russia. A synthesis meeting at the national level followed these regional workshops and participants were asked to reflect on three strategic questions: what needs to change to address the issues; what opportunities exist for influencing that change; what partnerships need to be developed to bring about this change? The results of the workshops were synthesized and recommendations and strategies produced to address each of the priority issues

In the 1990s, the international community placed both biodiversity protection and trade liberalisation high on its agenda, resulting in the formation of global agreements and institutions, such as the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Distinct in character, they are increasingly linked through the many ways that trade rules affect biodiversity. Developing separately and involving very different communities, there is a risk that the rules and policies of one regime could hinder the effectiveness of the other. This publication seeks to encourage sustainable development by examining and building upon the complementary aspects of these two international regimes. It describes specific proposals fo resolving or avoiding conflicts and for promoting synergies, including opportunities to support effective implementation of the trade-related aspects of the CBD.
