Los objetivos de este taller, que llevó a cabo en Cuidad Guatemala del 5 al 8 julio de 1999, fueron los siguentes: 1, intercambiar lecciones aprendidas en los diversos enfoques de conservación y manejo de humedales y zonas costeras en los proyectos ejecutados en América Central; 2, establecer prioridades regionales y nacionales de conservación y manejo de humedales y zonas costeras; 3, difundir los logros alcanzados por PROARCA/Costas y el Programa de Humedales de UICN/ORMA. Durante el taller, los participantes e invitados especiales hicieron presentaciones sobre estudios de caso, compartieron experiencias institucionales y se intercambiaron cirterios entre actores clave de la región.

An increasing number of land reform projects are taking place in conservation areas. Many of these are concerned with the restitution of land rights to people dispossessed of their land, and others are more generally concerned with effecting tenure reform and redistributing land to the disadvantaged and the poor. The purpose of this document is to facilitate information exchange between the land and conservation sectors with respect to land reform and conservation areas and to determine a common framework within which they can work. The resulting information will provide the contact for a set of recommendations for a framework for policy systems and procedures for land reform and conservation areas.

The effects of household characteristics on crop diversity are examined using household-level data based on a stratified random sample of 180 households from two districts in Zimbabwe, Uzumba-Maramba-Pfungwe and Tsholotsho.
CBNRM and its contribution to economic development in southern Africa : proceedings of exchange visit workshop for directors
   

The exchange visit was designed to enable directors of various government departments from SADC states to examine the Mahenye community's CAMPFIRE project in the southeast lowveld in Zimbabwe, as a working model of CBNRM principles. Specifically, the objective was to contribute to the development of an enbaling environment that will facilitate CBNRM being accepted as a key element in economic development strategies. This was achieved during the workshop by creating a common understanding of processes, issues, principles and constraints that affect CBNRM in southern Africa, and developing a set of guidelines and recommendations concerning the development of natural resource-related policies in the region.

A global review of protected areas budgets and staff

Over 600 protected area agencies world-wide were surveyed on their budgets and staffing levels. From the 108 countries surveyed it emerged that budgetary provision was very uneven - ranging from $24 to $12,308 per km2. There is also a positive correlation between economic development and population density. Priorities for financial assistance were identified.
