Guidelines for protected area management categories : interpretation and application of the protected area management categories in Europe
   

The IUCN system for classifying protected areas distinguishes six management categories (I-VI). This publication aims to further clarify how they can be interpreted within Europe, in order to help protected areas managers and others concerned with protected areas to apply the IUCN system more consistently to ensure reliable categorisation and data gathering.

IUCN's Temperate and Boreal Forest Programme (TBFP), which is part of the broader IUCN Forest Conservation Programme, has identified Russia as a top priority for the development of a country-level program to promote conservation and sustainable forest management initiatives in temperate and boreal countries. As a result, a series of four participatory workshops were held across the country, examining the Russian Far East, Siberia, and European Russia. A synthesis meeting at the national level followed these regional workshops and participants were asked to reflect on three strategic questions: what needs to change to address the issues; what opportunities exist for influencing that change; what partnerships need to be developed to bring about this change? The results of the workshops were synthesized and recommendations and strategies produced to address each of the priority issues

In the 1990s, the international community placed both biodiversity protection and trade liberalisation high on its agenda, resulting in the formation of global agreements and institutions, such as the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Distinct in character, they are increasingly linked through the many ways that trade rules affect biodiversity. Developing separately and involving very different communities, there is a risk that the rules and policies of one regime could hinder the effectiveness of the other. This publication seeks to encourage sustainable development by examining and building upon the complementary aspects of these two international regimes. It describes specific proposals fo resolving or avoiding conflicts and for promoting synergies, including opportunities to support effective implementation of the trade-related aspects of the CBD. Although most antelope species still exist in large numbers in sub-Saharan Africa (some in hundreds of thousands), up to three-quarters of the species are in decline. Threats to their survival arise from the rapid growth of human and livestock populations, with consequent degradation and destruction of natural habitats, and excessive offtake by meat hunters. In addition, some parts of Africa are mow almost completely devoid of large wild animals because of uncontrolled slaughter during recent civil wars. This report presents the information currently held by the IUCN/SSC Antelope Specialist Group on the conservation status of each antelope species (and selected subspecies) in sub-Saharan Africa. Key areas have been identified for the conservation of representative antelope communities. While external donors make the greatest contributions to the conservation of antelopes, greater recognition of wildlife conservation in national and regional development plans is often a critically important requirement
