Industry plays a vital role in the economic growth of a country. The industrialisation process is essential for modernisation, income generation, employment opportunites, industrial development and the production of other necessary facilities. Recognising the importance of environmental considerations in industrial development, HMGN endorsed the guidelines on 24 July 1995 and published it in the Gazette on 6 November 1995 (vol.45, no.29, 1995). This publication is an unofficial translation of these guidelines

Government policies on agriculture, forestry, water, energy and industry have tacitly encouraged over-use of the country's natural resources. The consequent exploitation of natural resources has had a negative impact on productivity by raising production and maintenance costs and aggravating the problem of biodiversity conservation. The high degree of conversion of existing natural resources, such as forest into land, has necessitated a proper investigation of the trade-off between the cost and benefits of such conversion. The study addresses selected government policies and their implications for the environment and suggests measures for integrating economic and environmental poliy in Nepal. A general analysis of the status of environmental economics in Nepal is given. Also discussed is the economic valuation of natural resources and environmental services with the help of physical linkages and the behavioral approach

Deer are a unique group of mammals recognised for their grace and beauty. Some are also prime examples of flagship species, whose continued survival sustains the complex interplay of flora and fauna. Today many species are under threat of extinction. This action plan, aimed at range country biologists, academics and students, state and federal employees of wildlife, protected area and environmental agencies as well as non-governmental conservation organisations has three main objectives: to identify the status and distribution of threatened species of deer and propose action for their conservation; outline scientific methods for obtaining information about the status of poorly known populations; and list conservation priorities for deer in each of the range countries

The first comprehensive treatment of North American rodents of conservation concern. This action plan summarises the rodent fauna of North America and provides available information on every rodent taxon that has been considered to be of conservation concern by state, provincial and private conservation agencies and regional experts. It is hoped that the survey provided in this action plan will serve as a common ground for all these parties in drawing up conservation strategies for rodents

Biodiversity-related laws and institutions will be key mechanisms for attaining the objectives of the Convention on biological diversity. As part of the national biodiversty planning process, legal and institutional profiles should be undertaken to ascertain which laws apply to and affect biodiversity and which institutions oversee legislation and portfolios which intersect with biodiversity conservation, sustainable use and benefit-sharing of genetic resources. Drawing on lessons learned in Bangladesh, Cuba and the Gambia, this will provide legal practitioners with background information and a suggested analytical road map for reviewing their country's particular legal and institutional situation

Sharks and their relatives, the rays and chimaeras, are the diverse group of cartilaginous fishes that have evolved over 400 million years. Historically considered of low economic value to large-scale fisheries, today many of these fishes have become the target of directed commercial and recreational fisheries around the world, and they are increasingly taken in the by-catch of fisheries targeting other species. This report emphasizes the widely-acknowledged need to improve shark fishery monitoring, expand biological research and take management action. It serves as an introduction to the ecology, status and conservation of the sharks and their relatives for a general audience. Shark fisheries can only be managed sustainably, and shark populations remain viable, with the introduction of new conservation and management initiatives.

In 1994, IUCN launched Parks for life: Action for Protected Areas in Europe - a plan devised by IUCN with 200 partners to ensure an adequate, effective and well-managed network of protected areas in Europe. In November 1997, some 150 protected area experts from 34 countries met to review progress and chart a course for future work. Containing 11 papers and 6 workshop reports, emphasis is on the implementation of 5 priority projects : upgrading the management of Category II sites, identifying potential World Heritage sites, building cooperation in transboundary protected areas, restoring wetlands in protected areas and conserving land used by the military

WWF and IUCN have joined forces to outline a policy that will address the complexity of the oceans and coasts as well as our dependency on them. The challenge of protecting and sustainably managing marine natural resources, the last great source of wild-caught food on this planet, is a daunting one. The document sets out the goals to be attained and the guiding principles by which these objectives can be achieved

A comprehensive bibliographic catalogue of over 1,600 IUCN publications. Includes not only the titles published by IUCN but also those produced in collaboration with others, as well as the publications of the Ramsar Convention Bureau, the CITES Secretariat, TRAFFIC and the World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC). Also available in this catalogue, an expanded list of Red Data Books and Lists, including those published nationally. Author, title, series and subject indexes provided

Describes a field-level assessment of how people living near the Mount Elgon National Park in Uganda use the park's forest resources. It argues that extractive use of a range of timber and non-timber forest products, if properly monitored and controlled, is not necessarily a threat to biodiversity. The book explains clearly which data gathering methods were chosen and why, and how the results of this assessment can be used to develop collaborative management agreements with local people. Interdisciplinary and practically oriented, this book should be obligatory reading for protected area managers and others who aim to involve rural people in forests and nature conservation
