The Petén forest is a huge tropical forest area in the north part of Guatemala. For twenty years, the forest has been severely deforested in order to expand agriculture and provide timber. The forest also contains archelogical remnants of the Maya civilisation. In 1990, part of the Petén forest became the Maya Biosphere Reserve. Other action to preserve this forest include: the ProPetén Project which promotes sustainable development. Shows a number of the products of the forest: "chicle" or latex, allspice and "xate". Eco-tourism is also discussed.
