2012 lived up to its promise of being one of the busiest years for the global environmental community. From the birth of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) to the Rio+20 conference, and from UN climate and biodiversity meetings to IUCN’s own World Conservation Congress, our Union certainly had our hands full this year.

This project attempts to profile the disaster that took place in Neelum Valley, AJK, Pakistan. Its goal is to strengthen decision-making tools by identifying the main land use factors and land use strategies that affect the vulnerability of communities in Neelum Valley.

La Liste du patrimoine mondial compte 156 explicitement reconnus pour leurs valeurs exceptionnelles du point de vue de la biodiversité. Ensemble, ils représentent les principaux écosystèmes de la planète. Or, certains sites présentant des valeurs exceptionnelles attachées à la biodiversité ne font pas encore partie de ce réseau de « biens du patrimoine mondial de la biodiversité ».

The World Heritage List includes 156 properties explicitly recognized for their outstanding biodiversity values, which together represent the world’s major ecosystems. However, some areas with outstanding biodiversity values are still not part of this network of ‘biodiversity World Heritage sites’. To address this issue, IUCN and UNEP-WCMC have developed this global thematic study, with a focus on the terrestrial realm.

This annual report is the last on the four–year period that ended in December 2012. It is designed to give an idea of the IUCN set –up in Central and West Africa, the actions undertaken and latest achievements; it also gives an idea of the IUCN Comprehensive Programme adopted in Jeju last September.

Ce rapport annuel est donc le dernier de la période quadriennale qui s'est achevée en décembre 2012. Il est conçu pour donner une idée du dispositif de l'UICN en Afrique Centrale et Occidentale, des actions entreprises et, des derniers résultats obtenus ; il donne également une idée du Programme global de l'UICN adopté à Jeju en septembre dernier.

Ecosystem goods and services make critical contributions to food security by supporting the availability, access and use of foods, and by strengthening the stability of food systems. Ecosystem degradation and weak ecosystem governance not only compromise the ability of developing country populations to farm, access and use food effectively, but also undermine the effectiveness of food security policies.
