This report summarizes the conservation status of 167 freshwater fishes, 166 land snails and 157 reptiles native to the Pacific Islands of Oceania (Micronesia, Polynesia and Melanesia). It identifies Pacific Island species that are threatened with extinction at the global level, according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria – the world’s most widely accepted methodology for measuring extinction risk.

The Arabian Peninsula contains a diversity of desert and mountain habitats. Reptile species richness is high, with 172 species currently recognized. Among these, 89 species (52%) are endemic to the Arabian Peninsula. The conservation status of these species was assessed at a workshop held in Sharjah, UAE, 6-9 February 2012 through the application of the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria at the global and regional scales. Distribution maps were compiled for the majority of species.

The objective of this document is to outline a framework within which logging companies adhering to Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certification can be the catalyst needed to ensure the long-term preservation of African great apes. Specific guidelines and practical considerations are provided as to how and why forestry and conservation practitioners should col-laborate in maintaining wildlife.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) across the MedPAN Network face common challenges, among them the lack of awareness and understanding of the impacts of invasive species, the scarcity of information on best management practices and a lack of baseline information, guidelines and trained local staff to identify and gather more information on the introduction, spread and impact of alien species.

In order to gain further experience on rights-based approaches (RBAs) to conservation, the project focused on undertaking a situation analysis in the Xe Champhone Ramsar Site in Lao PDR. It examined the under-researched issue of customary law governing natural resources, including its relationship with statutory law. This publication summarizes and analyses the findings of the field work.

Everybody knows that humans are members of the mammalian Order Primates, but ask somebody to name some of our cousins and they would at best come up with five or six of the most widely known.

The research focused on the perceptions of communities on the role of ecosystems for disaster risk reduction, particularly in the context of the March 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Japan. The research was carried out in the region of Sendai, and a study reviewed the institutional setup and mechanisms for Japan’s risk reduction, reconstruction and land use planning.

To address the lack of sufficent knowledge on wetland biodiversity in Tanguar Haor, a comprehensive survey on biodiversity was conducted to understand the present status, habitat classification, population density and diversity of wildlife. The main goal of this book is to share information on the biodiversity of and threats to flora in Tanguar Haor. The text includes species profiles for the most important and popular plant species in Tanguar Haor, to facilitate plant identification.
