This report presents actions and outputs in the five areas and the four-year programme 2009-2012: Conserving biodiversity for life; changing the climate forecast; naturally energizing the future; improving life in healthy ecosystems; greening the world Economy. For a marked strengthening of ties and synergies between the various components of IUCN, it takes into consideration the outputs proposed by the Commissions and IUCN members.

Sustaining the World’s Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) provides examples of advances made in the operationalization of the five-module approach to ecosystem based management (EBM) for sustaining the goods and services of the world’s LMEs.

This study examines the four options being considered by the European Commission for dealing with indirect land use change (ILUC) arising from the use of biofuels under the Renewable Energy Directive. An alternative approach is developed that would encourage producers and growers to undertake practices that mitigate ILUC. This study identifies a range of ILUC mitigation practices and recommends a market mechanism to encourage such activities through the use of a carbon credit scheme.

When making assessments at regional levels it is also particularly important to recognize that while IUCN Red List Categories reflect the relative extinction risk of species, the process of setting priorities for conservation actions may require several additional considerations. As a consequence, the following guidelines were produced to assist in the application of the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria at regional levels.

En Afrique de l’ouest, la principale, sinon la seule, activité industrielle susceptible d’avoir un impact sur les aires protégées est l’industrie extractive au sens large. En effet, pour pouvoir pleinement remplir leur rôle écologique, les aires protégées sont généralement localisées loin des agglomérations et donc loin des zones industrielles. Seules les mines, en raison des spécificités géologiques locales, sont susceptibles de s’implanter à proximité d’aires protégées.
