This report has been commissioned by the Atoll Ecosystem Conservation Project at the Ministry of Housing, Transport and Environment, Government of Maldives, and its main objective is to quantify and demonstrate the economic value of the Maldivian coastal and marine biodiversity; and to provide an economic rationale for biodiversity conservation.

In this toolkit, we focus on both human (socioeconomic) and biophysical (ecological) aspects of monitoring. Socioeconomic monitoring normally focuses on people’s knowledge and attitude towards an ecosystem as well as their natural resource use and dependence. Ecological monitoring on the other hand will generally focus on a specific species or ecosystem, using supporting information on environmental conditions and associated organisms.

This second issue of the Global Re-introduction Perspectives provides 72 case-studies covering invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and plants. The case-studies are presented in the same format as the 2008 issue and the case-studies are vividly illustrated with color photographs.

The aim of this guideline is to aid maritime administrators, or other lead agencies working with ballast water management, to assess and quantify (as appropriate and possible) the potential economic consequences of unintended marine species introductions.

An environmental flow is the water regime provided within a river, wetland or coastal zone to maintain ecosystems and their benefits where there are competing water uses and where flows are regulated. Pioneering efforts in South Africa, Australia and the United States have shown that the process to establish them poses great challenges.

Biodiversity within inland water ecosystems in the Eastern Himalaya region is both highly diverse and of great regional importance to livelihoods and economies. However, development activities are not always compatible with the conservation of this diversity, and the ecosystem requirements of biodiversity are frequently not considered in the development planning process.

A profound retrospective of the first decade of the UN Global Compact, challenges in the light of the year of biodiversity, and instruments for an adequate Corporate Citizenship are some of the issues highlighted in the new 2010 edition of the Global Compact International Yearbook. One chapter is entirely devoted to biodiversity.

L'Afrique de l'Ouest dispose d'importantes potentialités en termes de biodiversité, notamment dans ses aires protégées, dont neuf parmi les plus exceptionnelles, localisées dans cinq pays (Mauritanie, Sénégal, Guinée, Côte d'Ivoire et Niger), sont inscrites sur la liste des sites du patrimoine mondial naturel de l'UNESCO.

La présente évaluation de l'efficacité de gestion des sites Ramsar d'Afrique de l'Ouest a été réalisée à partir d'un échantillon de treize sites en Afrique de l'Ouest, répartis dans cinq pays (Bénin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Liberia et Mali), francophones ou anglophones.
