The World Heritage List includes 156 properties explicitly recognized for their outstanding biodiversity values, which together represent the world’s major ecosystems. However, some areas with outstanding biodiversity values are still not part of this network of ‘biodiversity World Heritage sites’. To address this issue, IUCN and UNEP-WCMC have developed this global thematic study, with a focus on the terrestrial realm.

This publication provides a much needed and timely tool to assist in the collective effort to find new and better solutions to address the various threats to the marine biological diversity and productivity. It provides evidence-based recommendations on improving and accelerating actions on delivering ocean protection and management through marine protected areas and facilitates the sharing of experiences and lessons learned.

The Protected Planet Report is a new initiative that tracks global progress towards Target 11 of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s (CBD) Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The Protected Planet Report 2012 underlines the successes of countries, communities and nongovernmental organisations with respect to protected areas.

This publication is intended to raise awareness amongst all stakeholders and galvanise wider action to boost drylands conservation and development. The book is designed to inform and remind us of the beauty of dryland biodiversity and its intrinsic and instrumental value. It demonstrates the mutual dependency of dryland biological and cultural diversity.

With the smaller number of marine protected areas (MPAs) compared with terrestrial protected areas, there is less experience and understanding of applying the categories to MPAs. Application of the categories to MPAs has often been inaccurate and inconsistent.

Cette publication présentée dans le contexte du Programme Régional pour la Conservation Marine et Côtière d’Afrique de l’Ouest (PRCM) succède au volume de 2005 intitulé Gestion environnementale de l’exploitation pétrolière offshore et du transport maritime de pétrole.

This publication, produced in the context of the Regional Programme for West African Marine and Coastal Conservation (PRCM), is a successor to a 2005 volume entitled "Environmental management of offshore oil exploitation and maritime oil transport." The book helped us to better understand the environmental and socio-economic issues and options created by the emerging offshore oil and gas industry.

This paper outlines how the design of REDD could influence its poverty implications and the key requirements for ensuring that REDD works for the poor. It summarises the findings of a much longer analysis recently prepared on behalf of the PEP, entitled Making REDD Work for the Poor.
