Com base no volume de rejeitos lançados e na extensão das áreas atingidas, o rompimento da Barragem de Fundão, em Mariana, Minas Gerais, foi o maior desastre ambiental de todos os tempos na mineração brasileira, e um dos mais graves do mundo. Ao serem transportados a jusante da barragem rompida, os rejeitos foram se acumulando ao longo dos rios e alcançaram o estuário do Rio Doce, na ecorregião marinha do Leste brasileiro, afetando importantes ecossistemas.

Based on the volume of tailings releases and the distance they travelled, the Fundão Dam failure in southeast Brazil (Mariana, Minas Gerais state) was the largest ever environmental disaster in Brazil’s mining industry, and one of the world’s most serious. As they dispersed downriver, the tailings accumulated along the riverbanks and reached the Rio Doce estuary in the Eastern Brazilian Marine Ecoregion.

This report is based on extensive literature search to reveal the elements of animal and plan biodiversity in the State of Kuwait, and points out missing information on other little-known groups. Despite its small area, Kuwait enjoys a rich fauna, given its desert and marine habitats. Hundreds of published scientific papers and reference books were reviewied to amass all species, fauna and flora, that were reported from Kuwait.

Atividades extrativas e práticas agrícolas insustentáveis afetam a bacia hidrográfica do Rio Doce e suas áreas costeiras e marinhas adjacentes há séculos. Quando a barragem de rejeitos de Fundão se rompeu em 5 de novembro de 2015, uma onda de lama desceu o rio até chegar ao mar, causando 19 mortes, destruindo vilas e vegetação ciliar, revolvendo os sedimentos do rio e prejudicando a vida de milhares de pessoas.

The Rio Doce watershed and its adjacent coastal and marine areas have been affected by centuries of extractive activities and unsustainable agricultural practices. When the Fundão tailings dam collapsed on 5 November 2015, a wave of mud swept down the river to the sea, causing 19 deaths, destroying villages, riparian vegetation, scraping off river sediments and disrupting the lives of thousands of people.

O relatório traz informações e dados selecionados sobre a qualidade física, química e biológica da água e uma visão geral da biodiversidade terrestre, de água doce e marinha na bacia do Rio Doce desde o rompimento da barragem até o momento atual.

The report contextualises the current status of water quality and biodiversity in the Rio Doce watershed, providing selected data and information on the physical, chemical and biological quality of the water and an overview of the terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity since the dam rupture.

The high amount of land used for cultivation and livestock farming has dramatically shaped landscapes in Europe and throughout the rest of the world. Agriculture is a fundamental human activity that intrinsically depends on nature and at the same time poses a threat to it. Thus, sustainability has emerged as a necessity in future agricultural policy and practice.

There is growing recognition of the need for sport and sports events to be conducted in socially and environmentally responsible ways and this is reflected in the attitudes of governments, public authorities and regulators. This means that taking a proactive and diligent approach to environmental management is a vital part of the sport sector’s licence to operate as well as growing and sustaining fan bases.

Au cours des dernières années, la biologie de synthèse est apparue comme un ensemble de techniques et de technologies permettant à l’homme de lire, interpréter, modifier, concevoir et fabriquer de l’ADN, afin d’influencer rapidement les formes et les fonctions des cellules et des organismes et, potentiellement, des espèces et des écosystèmes entiers.
