This book links the emerging concepts of complexity, complex adaptive system (CAS) and resilience to forest ecology and management. It explores how these concepts can be applied in various forest biomes of the world with their different ecological, economic and social settings, and history. Individual chapters stress different elements of these concepts based on the specific setting and expertise of the authors.

Das Thema Umwelt wird das 21. Jahrhundert womöglich so prägen, wie kaum ein anderes. Denn Umwelt steht für die Umgebung des Menschen, die auf ihn einwirkt und die er durch sein Handeln beeinflusst. Doch wie ist es um sie bestellt? Dietrich Jörn Weder nimmt den Leser mit auf eine erkenntnisreiche, aufwühlende und teils erschreckende Reise um den Erdball. Er zeigt, dass die Bedrohung der Umwelt und damit der menschlichen Lebensgrundlagen vor Ländergrenzen nicht haltmacht.

Sponsored and co-organized by the World Bank Europe and Central Asia Disaster Risk Management team, the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the purpose of this workshop was to share best practices and experience in innovative and state-of-the-art hydrometeorological services and their use in disaster risk reduction mechanisms that are effectively protecting lives, livelihood, and assets.
