Community participation

Community Environmental Action Planning (CEAP) is a stripped-down and simple participatory approach that has been used successfully over several years, and in a variety of forms, to introduce a greater degree of participation into environmental planning.

The first in a regional series, this report examines forest management experiences of Canada and the United States, which have interrelated histories, economies and similar ecological and social systems.

Le présent document a pour objectif de rendre compte des formations, études de cas, discussions et échanges en tous genres qui, pendant quatre jours, ont largement nourri la réflexion pour une meilleure implication des ONG ouest-africains dans la conservation en général et la gestion des aires protégées en particulier. Il est organisé autour de six thématiques constituant chacune un chapitre.

O Caderno dos Conhecimentos, preparado no quadro do Programa Regional de Educação Ambiental do PRCM, descreve o ambiente costeiro e marinho dos países implicados (Mauritânia, Cabo Verde, Senegal, Gâmbia, Guiné-Bissau, Guiné-Conacri, Serra Leoa). Destina-se, antes de mais, aos professores e formadores, permitindo-lhes transmitir aos jovens o grande valor do seu património comum e a necessidade da sua conservação para as gerações futuras.

This knowledge handbook, produced in the framework of the Regional Environmental Education Programme of PRCM, describes the coastal and marine environment of the countries involved in this programme (Mauritania, Senegal, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea and Sierra Leone). It is mainly directed to teachers so as to help them transmit to the youth the great value of their common heritage and the necessity to conserve it for future generations.

Ce cahier des connaissances, réalisé dans le cadre du Programme régional d’éducation environnementale du PRCM, décrit l’environnement côtier et marin des pays couverts par le programme (Mauritanie, Cap Vert, Sénégal, Gambie, Guinée-Bissau, Guinée, Sierra Leone). Il est avant tout destiné aux enseignants afin de leur permettre de transmettre à la jeunesse la grande valeur de leur patrimoine commun et la nécessité de le conserver pour les générations futures.

At the heart of co-management of natural resources is a process of collective understanding and action by local communities and other social actors. The process brings about negotiated agreements on management roles, rights, and responsibilities, making explicit the conditions and institutions of sound decentralised governance. De facto, co-management is about sharing power.

Les Territoires Autochtones de Conservation et les Aires du Patrimoine Autochtone et Communautaire — en bref, les APAC — font l'objet d'une Note d'information de l'UICN/CEESP présentée à la réunion SBSTTA de la CBD en mai 2010. Ce document plus complet expose les exemples et analyses à l'origine des recommandations contenues dans ladite Note d'information. Ce document peut être lu conjointement à la Note, mais aussi indépendamment, car les principaux concepts y sont redéfinis.

Los territorios indígenas de conservación y las áreas conservadas por pueblos indígenas y comunidades locales — ICCA para abreviar — son el tema de una Nota Informativa de la UICN/CEESP presentada en el CDB SBSTTA en mayo de 2010. El presente documento, más largo, ofrece algunos ejemplos y análisis que sustentan la asesoría sobre políticas contenida en esa Nota Informativa.

Indigenous conservation territories and areas conserved by indigenous peoples and local communities — ICCAs for short — are the subject of an IUCN/CEESP Briefing Note launched at CBD SBSTTA in May 2010. This larger document provides the examples and analysis underlying the policy advice contained in that Briefing Note. The document can be read in conjunction with the Briefing Note or as a stand-alone, as main concepts are described again here.
