Ecosystem loss and degradation are not just an environmental crisis; they are a profound threat to human health and well-being. Land transformation and biodiversity loss are among the major factors driving the emergence of infectious diseases. Annually, more than five new infectious diseases are estimated to emerge, most of them originating from wildlife, with some having the potential to spread within human populations and cause epidemics or pandemics.

Maintaining, enhancing and restoring ecological integrity in conservation planning and action

2026 Jones, Kendall R. | Nicholson, Emily | Robinson, John G. | Andrade Pérez, Angela | Annagylyjova, Jamal | Czúcz, Bálint | Gonda, Catalina | Grantham, Hedley | Halpern, Benjamin S. | Mackey, Brendan (Brendan G.) | Maina Mbui, Joseph | Rao, Madhu | Sankaran, Mahesh | Santos, Julianna | Sarira,Tasya | Starkey, Malcom |

This report results from the deliberations of an IUCN Task Force on Ecological Integrity, and aims to provide guidance on how to successfully incorporate ecological integrity into conservation policy and practice. Ecological integrity, together with several related concepts, are grounded in a long history in the scientific literature.

Urban-rural linkage: an ecosystem governance perspective

2026

This publication focuses on ecosystem governance in the context of urban-rural linkages, analysing nine case studies to develop principles for ecosystem governance. Ecosystem governance utilises the ecosystem approach, adopted by the Convention on Biological Diversity, which emphasises the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the importance of integrated management for the analysis of the case studies.

2024 Van den Hoof, C. | De Nocker, L. | Sanon, A.A.

Development of a regional capacity in natural capital accounting of protected areas in West Africa

2024 Van den Hoof, C. | De Nocker, L. | Sanon, A.A. | Tiemtoré, S. | Buchhorn, M. | Smets, B. |

West Africa is characterized by rapid population growth, endemic poverty and poor governance and management of natural resources. This situation is exacerbated by the negative effects of climate change and is unequivocally leading to the depletion of West African natural capital, including the ecosystems on which the population largely depends.

Atendiendo compromisos globales y necesidades hídricas locales

2022 Raes, Leander | Meza Prado, Kelly | Nájera, M. | Hawthorne, Peter L. | Saborío, Javier L. | Chacón, Ó. | Vogl, Adrian L. | Sanchún, A. |

Critical approaches to gender in mountain ecosystems

2021

Women play a key role in nature conservation, yet they often lack the inputs, technologies, training and extension services, and various enablers and linkages that can enhance the effectiveness of their efforts. Evidence indicates that gender-inclusive and gender-sensitive conservation practices have far-reaching multiplier impacts. This report brings out gender-specific knowledge for ecosystem management in mountain regions.

Freizeitaktivitäten im Lebensraum der Alpentiere

2005 Ingold, Paul |
