La pêche aux mulets est devenue en moins d'une décennie la première pêcherie artisanale en quantité débarquée en Mauritanie. Exploitée de manière intensive, la ressource est aujourd'hui menacée. Un processus consultatif pilote a été appuyé depuis l'an 2000, réunissant l'ensemble des parties prenantes impliquées dans cette pêcherie, pour formuler des recommandations pour la gestion durable de cette ressource.

The deep ocean is increasingly recognized as a major global reservoir of the Earth's biodiversity, although but a small fraction of the oceans' ecosystems found at depths below 200 meters have been studied. Sharks and their relatives, the rays and chimaeras, are the diverse group of cartilaginous fishes that have evolved over 400 million years. Historically considered of low economic value to large-scale fisheries, today many of these fishes have become the target of directed commercial and recreational fisheries around the world, and they are increasingly taken in the by-catch of fisheries targeting other species.
