Gender and equity in the protected areas of West Africa

Within a landscape of overlapping ecological, social and economic priorities, there exists a fundamental need to balance the land use dynamics of natural resource management with environmental and livelihood considerations. However, in striving to reach such a balance, people and local institutions are often excluded or forgotten.
The Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM) was developed by IUCN and the World Resources Institute (WRI) to assist countries in identifying opportunities for forest landscape restoration (FLR), analysing priority areas at a national or sub-national level, and designing and implementing FLR interventions. As part of IUCN’s effort to update the methodology, these guidelines have been developed to ensure the application of ROAM and the ensuing FLR implementation, including any policy uptake and land-use planning, is gender responsive.
Culture can be a close ally to gender equality. This report aims to consolidate leading research, statistics and case studies in the field of culture and gender equality, focusing in particular on creativity and heritage, as a contribution to international debates on the post-2015 agenda. It aims to benchmark progress to date and proposes recommendations for governments, decision-makers, the international community and civil society.
Across the globe, women are heavily involved in the environmental sector, including in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, and in adapting to and mitigating climate change. However, women's participation and representation in decision-making processes that pertain to their and their families' environmental well-being are often restricted. In 2014, Conservation International collaborated with IUCN's Global Gender Office (GGO) to produce case studies about the state of women in environmental decision making in three countries: Ecuador, Liberia, and the Philippines.
