Natural heritage

This short independent study focuses on the relationship between the extractive industries and natural World Heritage properties. It was commissioned through IUCN in conjunction with the World Heritage Centre, as well as the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and Shell; the latter two funded the exercise.

El objetivo preciso de este manual de referencia es coadyuvar a la gestión de los valores naturales en los bienes del Patrimonio Mundial. Por ello su meta son los bienes, naturales y mixtos, del Patrimonio Mundial y los paisajes culturales (inscritos en función de criterios culturales). La intención es ayudar a los administradores a entender los conceptos y procesos del Patrimonio Mundial e incorporar dichos conceptos y procesos a la gestión de los sitios naturales.

The marine World Heritage thematic study was written to provide guidance to States Parties and conservation practitioners on how to best apply the World Heritage Convention in the oceans and seas. This study identifies the relationships that exist between World Heritage cultural landscapes and protected areas, and documents the practical management and governance associations that occur between them. It looks at i) the conceptual similarities and differences between these two systems of conservation designations; ii) the spatial overlap between them; and iii) the practical interrelation and integration that occurs ‘on the ground’.
