Sustainable fisheries development in Viet Nam : issues and approaches

Is development with biodiversity conservation an option? As a leading economic and political power, a key development assistance donor and the custodian of 21 overseas Countries and Territories with outstanding biodiversity, the European Union has a responsibility, to lead by example.
This document should be read in conjunction with the abovementioned Asia-Pacific Guidelines for the Development of National ESD Indicators (UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education, 2007). This Quick Guide provides Asia-Pacific stakeholders with an overview of the key messages and tools identified in the Guidelines. By highlighting sections from the Guidelines, the Quick Guide serves as a map to assist stakeholders in finding relevant information, as necessary.
Aquaculture currently faces a significant challenge: how to fulfill the expectation of alleviating the pressure that fishing fleets exercise on fish populations without leading to environmental problems. It is particularly expected to develop widely in the near future in the Mediterraneans European, Southern and Eastern countries.

This publication aims to provide stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region with a practical resource from which to develop an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) indicator framework at the national level. The document highlights how learning, commitment and ownership among stakeholders can be maximized. It does not include an indicator framework itself.
