Sustainable development

The environmental movement has made huge progress over the last decades. Among others, it has raised awareness of challenges facing humanity, helped develop a critical mass of policies, and worked towards the implementation of many of these policies in collaboration with other stakeholders. Now, however, we are at a turning point in the history of the global environmental movement.

This toolkit explains the concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), especially the historical background and its evolution under the 36th chapter of Agenda. The second part provides very useful and interesting activities for teachers which could be used in training workshops for the promotion of ESD.

To take the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) conference forward, IUCN Pakistan organized a national conference on ESD in 2007, in collaboration with UNESCO. The workshop considered the linkages between ecology, economy and society with emphasis on learning from global best practices to take the sustainable development agenda forward, develop linkages with key partners and focus on required skills and processes to market sustainable lifestyles.

This publication is a result of recommendations articulated by the NCS and SPCS on the need for devolved decision-making to achieve a long-term sustainable development plan for D.I. Khan that integrates both socioeconomic and environmental imperatives. The Qila Saifullah – Integrated Development Vision is among the first in the province of Balochistan. The Vision is hinged on certain principles, including participation of communities, gender equity in policy and programmes, people and environment-friendly development.

The Sindh Strategy for Sustainable Development (SSSD) proposes a 10-year sustainable development agenda for Sindh. Its purpose is to highlight the ecological, economic and social issues of the province and to provide recommendations and strategic actions to address them. The strategy promotes the sustainable use of natural resources to achieve the objectives of poverty alleviation and social development through the participation of the people of Sindh.

This document summarizes Bangladesh’s existing capacity in addressing climate change, biodiversity and land degradation problems and concerns assessed through country-wide consultations. It includes an action plan developed to improve the country’s capacity in the public and private sectors and at individual, institutional and policy levels.
