Sustainable development

This book looks at the rationale for addressing the links between conservation and poverty reduction, arguing that such a focus is both ethically essential and a source of opportunities. It emphasizes the importance of multiple scales and negotiating trade-offs between scales and tackles the complex issue of institutional landscapes and the way in which changes at various institutional levels can lead to different and more positive outcomes.

Biodiversity plays an important role in the day-to-day life of a hotel. From the food in the restaurant and wood in furniture and fittings, to the amenities in the spa, the products of biodiversity are everywhere inside hotels. Outside, plants and animals make a hotel’'s public areas and gardens attractive for guests, while beyond the hotel gate, national parks, green spaces, coasts and natural habitats provide guests with opportunities for recreation and enjoyment.

The environmental movement has made huge progress over the last decades. Among others, it has raised awareness of challenges facing humanity, helped develop a critical mass of policies, and worked towards the implementation of many of these policies in collaboration with other stakeholders. Now, however, we are at a turning point in the history of the global environmental movement.

This toolkit explains the concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), especially the historical background and its evolution under the 36th chapter of Agenda. The second part provides very useful and interesting activities for teachers which could be used in training workshops for the promotion of ESD.

To take the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) conference forward, IUCN Pakistan organized a national conference on ESD in 2007, in collaboration with UNESCO. The workshop considered the linkages between ecology, economy and society with emphasis on learning from global best practices to take the sustainable development agenda forward, develop linkages with key partners and focus on required skills and processes to market sustainable lifestyles.

This publication is a result of recommendations articulated by the NCS and SPCS on the need for devolved decision-making to achieve a long-term sustainable development plan for D.I. Khan that integrates both socioeconomic and environmental imperatives. The Qila Saifullah – Integrated Development Vision is among the first in the province of Balochistan. It is the people’s vision for their future, of the quality of life they aspire to and the progressive milestones they would like to achieve. The Vision is hinged on certain principles, including participation of communities, gender equity in policy and programmes, people and environment-friendly development.

The Sindh Strategy for Sustainable Development (SSSD) proposes a 10-year sustainable development agenda for Sindh. Its purpose is to highlight the ecological, economic and social issues of the province and to provide recommendations and strategic actions to address them. The strategy promotes the sustainable use of natural resources to achieve the objectives of poverty alleviation and social development through the participation of the people of Sindh.
