Sustainable use

This book is designed to help conservation organisations, community-based organisations and protected area managers plan and run effective ecotourism businesses. It was created as part of the Business Skills Transfer Programme for Ecotourism Development, a joint effort by IUCN and Kuoni Group aimed at supporting conservation organisations in managing ecotourism-related businesses through business skills, knowledge and experience sharing.

This book provides a review of progress in achieving the EECCA Environment Strategy's objectives, and provides a solid analytical base for discussions on future environmental co-operation between EECCA countries and their partners.

This document reviews the present state of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) within the EMPAFISH project. Using the Driver-Pressure-State-Impacts-Response (DPSIR) framework develops a conceptual model which determines the elements that affect MPAs. This evaluation framework developed has helped to select an appropriate suite of indicators to support an ecosystem approach, an evaluation of the MPAs functioning and policy considerations discussion.

This book is a practical manual on how to develop and manage tourism in protected areas. It is for all those responsible for the management of protected areas as tourism destinations. These include not only protected-area managers but also local authorities, tourism promotion agencies and tourism business associations. It focuses on protected areas that are in an early stage of their tourism development and wish to do this in a well-planned and sustainable manner.

The report analyses the different ways for quantifying and accounting for water flows and productivity within the economy (including environmental needs). Based on the data, the report is said to provide the current state of knowledge of the different indicators and tools for quantifying water productivity and highlights why this is important for developing robust allocation and management systems that preserve the natural capital.

This document discusses the need to balance short-term water productivity gains – in particular in agriculture - with the long-term role that water flows provide for maintaining sustainable landscape ecosystem services (ESS), and serving multiple benefits to human well-being. The document provides a summary of concepts around the nexus of water productivity, water flows in landscapes and ecosystem services.
