Wetlands

In 2002, a detailed situation analysis of water and environmental issues was done for the Pangani Basin. Following that, a series of pilot projects funded by the Water and Nature Initiative (WANI) of IUCN and by DFID led to the development of a Pangani River Basin Management Project (PRBMP) that continued until 2011. In the final phase of the project, climate change was investigated further.

This report builds on these and other efforts to bring to light the important carbon sequestration potential of coastal wetlands, and the significant and largely unaccounted for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the disturbance, drainage, and conversion of these natural coastal carbon sinks for agriculture, tourism and other coastal development.

L'UICN a mené une étude sur le potentiel économique de la vallée du Sourou, dont les principales conclusions ont été présentées aux principaux acteurs de la vallée, lors d'un atelier à Tougan au Burkina Faso en avril 2010.

Le but de cette étude est de sensibiliser les décideurs politiques et les acteurs de la conservation de la biodiversité sur les valeurs économiques de la vallée du Sourou en vue d'influencer les politiques d'aménagement et de conservation des écosystèmes naturels. Les objectifs spécifiques sont : (i) déterminer l'importance écologique et économique des écosystèmes de la vallée du Sourou (ii) évaluer la valeur économique des biens et services environnementaux associés au fleuve Sourou.
