Waiting for democratic representation in Africa's social forests

The Responsive Forest Governance Initiative (RFGI) is an Africa-wide environmental-governance research and training program focusing on enabling responsive and accountable decentralization to strengthen the representation of forest-based rural people in local-government decision making. This Working Paper series will publish the RFGI case studies as well as other comparative studies of decentralized natural resources governance in Africa and elsewhere that focus on the intersection between local democracy and natural resource management schemes.

A rapid assessment of live coral mining and lime production in Mtwara

The extraction of live coral to burn and produce "white lime" or "chokaa" has a long history in Tanzania, yet in many areas it is believed that this practice has reached unsustainable levels and is considered to be one of the main contributors to reef and forest degradation along the coast. This assessment was developed to describe the size, geographic extent and socioeconomics of the coral mining and lime production industry within the buffer zone of Mnazi Bay-Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park.

Journal of East African natural history : a journal of biodiversity

The Journal publishes papers and notes in the field of natural history, broadly defined as the study of organisms in their natural state, relevant to the eastern African region. Of particular interest are contributions that add to our knowledge of the status and conservation of biological diversity in the region. Since the biological landscape is to a large extent shaped by man, papers on ethnobiology are also featured.

A socio-economic assessment of sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities of Kuruwitu and Vipingo, Kilifi District, Kenya

This report outlines the findings of the Coastal Livelihood Assessment for the Kuruwitu – Vipingo community, which lies on a Kenyan coast potentially significant for its marine biodiversity, as it has a distinct coral reef ecosystem with diverse coral assemblages which host a wide variety of tropical fish species as well as beaches that provide breeding and nesting sites for endangered sea turtles and birds. In response to declining marine life, and related decreases in local earnings and food security, the local community formed the Kuruwitu Conservation and Welfare Association (KCWA).
