Mitigating the impact of climate change presents governments and communities throughout the world with one of the main environmental challenges of our times. This publication provides an overview of the opportunities and challenges for carbon sequestration activities in the forestry and agricultural sectors of both industrialized and developing countries.

Use of and trade in wildlife is a fact of life for human society around the globe. Article IV of the CITES Convention requires that exporting countries restrict trade in Appendix II species to levels that are not detrimental either to species’ survival, or to their role within the ecosystems in which they occur (known as the “non-detriment finding”).

The regions of Eastern and Southern Africa, embracing the countries of Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia(land), Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Lesotho, Swaziland and South Africa display a great richness and diversity of cultures and peoples, geographical features and biodiversity. This complexity has created great diversity in resource use and management by rural people.

Forest loss and degradation carry a heavy human and environmental cost throughout tropical, temperate and boreal regions. In response, IUCN, WWF and various government and non-government partners have developed the Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) approach, which focuses on restoring the goods, services and ecological processes that forests can provide at the broader landscape level.

Economic forces underlie and explain much biodiversity degradation and loss, and economic instruments provide a useful set of tools for strengthening biodiversity conservation, sustainable use and equitable benefit sharing. If National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans are to be effective they must be justifiable in economic terms. This document reports on a project reviewing the use of economic measures in NBSAPs.

The title of this trilingual (Polish, English and German) publication refers to the theme of an international conference held in Poland in March 2002. Organic farming was presented at the conference as the most sustainable form of active environment conservation and an important element of rural development. Included in the document is a collection of papers presented at the conference with the final paper being the "Warsaw Declaration".

In preparation for WSSD, IUCN's international Task Force invited prominent experts from African civil society to meet together in Dakar. This publication in both English and French is the result of that meeting.
