The Red List of rhododendrons

Rhododendrons are stunning horticultural plants widely cultivated in temperate regions. In the wild they are mainly associated with centres of diversity in the Himalayas and in South East Asia, where they form important components of montane ecosystems. In total over 1000 species are recognised and the genus is subject to ongoing taxonomic debate. This report presents a review of the conservation status of Rhododendron species in their natural habitats, undertaken by experts from around the world in partnership with the IUCN/SSC Global Tree Specialist Group and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Guidelines and manual : procedures for community-based fire management CBFiM, Ghana
   

This Manual is first and foremost a community tool to facilitate implementation of Ghana’ s National Wildfire Management Policy. However it will also serve as an instrument for fire management trainers in communities with little experience in fire management and for consultation by professionals, students, policy makers, practitioners and communities when faced with fire related problems and incidents. It is expected that the Manual will constitute a solid base for capacity building in fire management. It is also expected that the Government of Ghana, District Assemblies in fire prone areas and other stakeholders will embrace the approaches outlined in the Manual and commit resources for the implementation of its outlined principles and practices. It is also hoped that the use and application of the prescriptions contained in the Manual will help to reduce the frequency of wildfires that have been plaguing Ghana in recent years.
Pangani River Basin, Tanzania : building consensus on water allocation and climate change adaptation

Climate change and the over exploitation of water resources is challenging the sustainability of the Pangani River Basin to deliver water services. Competition for diminishing water resources has led to tensions between the various stakeholders within the basin. Together with the government of Tanzania and donor partners, WANI has responded to this crisis by supporting the implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). This sought to bring together a variety of stakeholders by creating platforms for dialogue and encouraged collaboration towards a common goal. The Pangani River Basin Management Project has generated technical information and developed participatory forums, mainstreamed climate change, supported the equitable provision and wise governance of freshwater for livelihoods and environment for current and future generations. This case study describes the situation, activities taken, and results achieved during this process.
Komadugu Yobe Basin, upstream of Lake Chad, Nigeria

Inappropriate water management practices in the Komadugu Yobe Basin, upstream of Lake Chad in northern Nigeria, changed the seasonal river flow and caused widespread environmental degradation. Coupled with this was fragmented regulation and conflicting responsibilities among institutions, a lack of coordination for hydro-agricultural developments, inequitable access to water resources and growing tensions and risk of conflicts among water users. As a response to this situation, WANI and partners initiated a process of coordination and participation of all stakeholders in dialogue to reverse the trends in natural resources degradation in the basin through integrated management. This case study describes the situation, activities taken, and results achieved during this process.
Environmental flows : demonstrations and knowledge sharing through regional and global networks to turn policy into action

Environmental flows improve water management by ensuring a sustainable water supply to meet the needs of people, agriculture, energy, industry and the environment. Environmental flows are effectively a balance between water resources development and the need to protect freshwater-dependent ecosystems. WANI has contributed to environmental flow assessments in river basins in Asia, America, and Africa over the last 10 years with the aim of reducing environmental impacts and increasing the benefits of river basin development. Through scaling-up, lessons learned have been mainstreamed into integrated water resources management (IWRM) allowing for the capacity building of existing legislation and the establishment of new, appropriate legislation on environmental flows. This influence on IWRM and water policy has resulted in better water resources management.

This IUCN UK Commission of Inquiry on Peatlands presents one of the most extensive assessments of peatlands undertaken in the UK to date. It identifies the state and value of peatland ecosystems and develops ways to safeguard and restore their natural capital. The assessment focuses on blanket bog and raised bog peatlands, because they represent over 95% of all UK peatland habitat and offer an opportunity to make early and substantial progress in delivering a combination of economic, social and biodiversity gains. It provides an authoritative assessment of the available evidence, based on peer-reviewed scientific consensus about the state of peatlands, the impacts of different activities on peatland ecosystems and the services they provide and the benefits of restoring and conserving them. The assessment explores mechanisms and processes for peatland conservation action, recognising the different social, economic and environmental drivers.

El Foro Agua Santa 2011 reconoce todas las iniciativas realizadas sobre gestión ambiental y del recurso hídrico en la cuenca, pero asume que se requieren aún más y mayores esfuerzos. Este evento se realizó con el fin de aportar a la construcción de una visión y una agenda compartida de la cuenca y de los espacios legítimos de participación ciudadana, que permitan el diálogo y faciliten el alcance de consensos, generando compromisos concretos que sirvan para enfrentar la situación de vulnerabilidad en la que se encuentra la cuenca. La presente memoria del FAS 2011 describe y resume la realización del evento que se llevó a cabo los días 22 y 23 de setiembre de 2011 en la ciudad de Huaraz, Ancash, Perú

The documentary also collects the individual and collective measures which address the challenges lying ahead.

El informe se basa en resultados substantivos de nuestros casos de estudios nacionales, seleccionados cuidadosamente por sus variadas geografías, cubierta forestal y tasas de deforestación, así como estadios de los preparativos de REDD. El estudio concluye con el resultado de que, si bien la claridad jurídica es condición esencial para el éxito de los regímenes nacionales de REDD, dicha claridad no necesariamente exige que los países reescriban sus marcos legislativos y regulatorios existents.

Regional Red List status of carnivores in the Arabian Peninsula

A Regional Red List Workshop for the carnivores of the Arabian Peninsula took place 8-10 February 2011. The aim of the workshop was to assess the regional conservation status of terrestrial carnivores in the Arabian Peninsula. The information provided here will help to put national conservation priorities into a regional context, thus maximising the effectiveness of local and national conservation measures, and facilitating the development of integrated regional conservation strategies. This Red List publication summarizes results for terrestrial carnivores and provides the first overview of the conservation status of these species to follow IUCN Regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level – in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status.
