One of the pre-requisites in the process of putting in place the Kikuletwa Catchment Forum is development of training materials to be used for Training of Trainers (TOT) programme covering topics in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), entrepreneurships; community participation; gender and other cross cutting issues relating to WRM, climate change and adaptation strategies and the contribution of water resources in poverty reduction. This first module is divided into three parts: participatory planning for integrated water resources management; stakeholder participation in integrated water resources management; and gender participation in water resources management and development.
Selected medicinal plants of Chittagong Hill Tracts

The principle aim of this book is to provide detailed information on locally important medicinal plants of Bolipara, Bandarban and to preserve the traditional knowledge of herbal healers on medicinal plants use. This book describes 31 important species with medicinal properties, and including the scientific name; Bengali name; family name; vernacular name; general description; distribution; physiographic, edaphic and biotic requirements; silvicultural characteristics; phenological characteristics; regeneration; chemical constituents; medicinal uses; other uses; photographs and traditional use by the herbal healers of Bolipara.
Forest nurseries in Lebanon for native species production

During recent years there has been increasing interest in restoring the forest landscapes of Lebanon. A number of initiatives supporting different reforestation activities are being developed in the country. Most initiatives, however, have been focusing on no more than three tree species, partly because of the lack of technical references for native species production. The vision behind this publication is to provide a handbook that covers all the technical aspects of forest landscape restoration (FLR), from seed collection, through seedling production in the nursery, to planting out in the field. This will hopefully help in the process of planning and design, which is essential for supporting the restoration of forest landscapes. The handbook discusses: the procedure for seed collection, processing and storage; the principles of nursery management; the principles of planting and sowing in the field. The publication also includes nearly 30 protocols for propagating native plants that are important for restoration purposes, including trees and shrubs. Together they should provide a solid foundation for Lebanon’s foresters and others interested in producing native plants. The selection of species described here is not exhaustive, but they have been chosen for their ability to support ecological restoration and provide goods and services in the long term. In time this list will need to be expanded to include other species and practices of interest.
The status and distribution of freshwater biodiversity in the Western Ghats, India

The Western Ghats is one of the world’s most heavily populated biodiversity hotspots providing for and supporting 400 million people through water for drinking, transport, irrigation, and hydroelectric power, together with food and resources to sustain livelihoods. However, the pace of growth of the Indian economy and rates of industrial and urban development are not in tune with the conservation needs of it’s diverse freshwater ecosystems and the remarkably high diversity of species they contain. In most instances the development planning process does not consider the requirements of these freshwater ecosystems, mainly due to a lack of adequate information on the distribution and status of freshwater species and the threats they face. There is also little appreciation for the value of freshwater ecosystems to the livelihoods of many highly dependent people, often the poorest in society. In response to this need for information and for raised awareness, the Western Ghats Freshwater Biodiversity Assessment was conducted to review the global conservation status and distributions of 1,146 freshwater species belonging to four taxonomic groups: fishes (290 taxa), molluscs (77 taxa), odonates (171 taxa) and aquatic plants (608 taxa).

Towards a representative network of marine protected areas in Libya
   

Of the current 750 marine and coastal protected areas that have been created in the Mediterranean, two thirds of these are along the northern coast of the sea. Therefore important habitats along the eastern and southern coast are under-represented. The Mediterranean Representative Areas and Species (MedRAS) project aims at identifying priority habitats and species in these under-represented areas to be managed and protected. The focus of the present report is on Libya.
Guide pour le développement durable de l'aquaculture : réflexions et recommandations pour la pisciculture de truites
   

L'objet premier de ce guide est de proposer des réflexions et recommandations pour une aquaculture durable et responsable à l'intention des gestionnaires, des techniciens, des producteurs et des autres parties intéressées tels les élus ou les collectivités locales, et des représentants de la société civile. Il présente un caractère opérationnel et sa présentation facilite l'appropriation par tous, des recommandations formulées. Il est ensuite divisé en chapitres successifs, trois approches déclinées aux échelles de la Filière, du Territoire et du Site. Chacun de ces sous-guides est organisé selon l'ordre suivant : un contexte général, une vision (soit une phrase qui résume l'orientation essentielle souhaitée par les participants au séminaire), puis des enjeux et recommandations spécifiques, déclinés selon les composantes du développement durable, entre autres : environnement, économie, gouvernance et société.

Esta publicación de carácter técnico también contiene fichas de producción de plantas que constituyen una interesante herramienta de difusión.
Important plant areas of the south and east Mediterranean region : priority sites for conservation (Arabic version)

This report describes a rapid assessment of Important Plant Areas in the south and east Mediterranean; a project designed to provide the ‘wild plant perspective’ for the regional investment strategy of the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund. The project partnership of IUCN, Plantlife International and WWF with botanical teams from Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia, Syria and Albania, was supported by the French Development Agency. 10 recommendations have been developed to help direct the conservation of wild plants in the Mediterranean. Successful implementation of these will secure a sustainable future for the environment and inhabitants of this unique region; failure will condemn both to a poverty of natural resources and little or no resilience in the face of profound changes in climate.

This book is inspired by the IUCN Species of the Day 2010 web initiative, and serves as a guide to 365 of the world's species on the IUCN Red List. This list profiles a wide variety of species from the official list of threatened animal, fungi and plant. Each profile includes a photograph of the species, a location map describing the species' habitat, information on the level of threat (from "Least Concern" to "Extinct in the Wild"), and descriptions of why the species appears on the Red List.

Catalogue de bonnes pratiques d'adaptation aux risques climatiques au Burkina Faso

Plusieurs technologies sont actuellement utilisées en milieu rural du Burkina Faso, dont certaines peuvent être qualifiées de bonnes pratiques d’adaptation au changement climatique. Elles concernent plusieurs secteurs de développement notamment l’agriculture, l’élevage, la foresterie et agroforesterie, et l’énergie. Cinquante-quatre pratiques ont été décrites et regroupés en sept domaines : aménagement et gestion des sols, foresterie et agroforesterie, gestion des ressources en eau, gestion des intrants et techniques culturales, gestion de l’hydraulique pastorale, gestion des ressources pastorales et systèmes d’élevage, gestion de l’énergie. Certaines pratiques sont mise en oeuvre de façon intégrée soit dans le même domaine ou entre différents domaines. Le présent catalogue présente exclusivement les bonnes pratiques « technologiques » qui concourent au renforcement des capacités d’adaptation des communautés locales à la variabilité et au changement climatique.

Crossing borders for nature : European examples of transboundary conservation

This publication provides an in-depth review of the status of implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and of specific strategies and plans as part of CBD-determined National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) at national levels. This has been achieved by identifying the current status of the various legal and policy instruments, strategies, action plans and institutional frameworks for biodiversity conservation in the EU overseas entities; noting the extent to which these instruments have been and are being implemented; identifying the main lessons learned and documenting some of the best practices and exemplary cases of biodiversity conservation in the overseas entities; and analysing the extent to which these instruments are consistent with, supportive of, and supported by the legislation, policies, strategies and institutional arrangements for biodiversity conservation.
