The bulk of the information presented in this report was gathered from project reports from key organizations working in the wetlands and surrounding areas over the past decade or so, as well as from documents prepared for the site’s nomination when Lao PDR joined the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in 2010.

Esta obra presenta la situación de la gobernanza ambiental e indígena en Bolivia y Perú, a fin de ampliar la discusión sobre la gobernanza, sus principios normativos y políticas de aplicación, a través de ejemplos claros y puntuales. La gobernanza ambiental está relacionada con la protección de las áreas protegidas, la conservación de los recursos naturales y en el debate socioambiental y político sobre el cambio climático. En el espacio de la gobernanza, los procesos de concertación y la institucionalización de arreglos dan paso a las políticas públicas como respuesta a las demandas e inquietudes de variados actores sociales. La gobernanza es un instrumento analítico que permite comprender el sistema social-político, es resultado de las interacciones sociales y la interpretación a la cual se le somete. La gobernanza de los recursos naturales, de las áreas protegidas y la indígena, se refieren al sistema de regulación de la intervención de los actores. Ésta se genera en diversos ámbitos: local, nacional, regional y global, y se refleja en los acuerdos y tratados internacionales adoptados por las naciones y respaldados or las obligaciones legales establecidas en las constituciones de cada país y en los procesos impulsados desde las organizaciones de la sociedad civil.

Sharing governance! : a practical guide for marine protected areas in West Africa

This guide draws inspiration from the impressive volume Sharing Power, published by the IUCN/CEESP and IIED. The guide provides what we hope to be a convenient synthesis of the main phases of a shared-governance process for Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in West Africa. Among the key actors we are hoping to engage are civil servants in charge of managing MPAs, members of concerned communities and local groups and partners involved with MPAs, such as professionals working for environmental, humanitarian or sustainable development projects. This guide is intended to be a compact reference tool that enables users to quickly find their way around the different stages in the shared governance process and to assimilate or review the concepts and phases in order to render them operational in fair and effective ways. To remain as practical as possible, some of the inserts and illustrations in this guide are based on concrete examples from West Africa.

At a crucial time of rapid socio-economic change, ature and World Heritage in the Arab States provides an assessment of World Heritage in the Arab States region. This includes the conservation outlook for the five existing natural and mixed World Heritage sites in the region, as well as an analysis of the regions' potential natural heritage sites included in the Tentative Lists. This report has been produced by IUCN as a contribution to supporting the World Heritage Convention in the Arab States, recognizing the need to strengthen the identification, conservation and presentation of natural heritage in the region. It is intended to help identify future IUCN priorities for work on World Heritage. This report is a pilot project for a future, more extensive report, on the state of conservation of all natural and mixed World Heritage sites.

Preparing World Heritage nominations : second edition
   

The manual is based on the version of the "Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention" dated August 2011 and seeks to complement it. In particular, the manual seeks to support States Parties in implementing the World Heritage Convention and to provide guidance and knowledge that will help ensure a credible World Heritage List of well-managed properties of Outstanding Universal Value. it is hoped that the manual will help States Parties to carefully consider the implications of proceeding with World Heritage nominations and take the necessary steps to ensure that the effort is worthwhile for both the conservation of the property and the well-being of local communities and other local stakeholders.
CITES and CBNRM : proceedings of an international symposium on "The relevance of CBNRM to the conservation and sustainable use of CITES-listed species in exporting countries"

A symposium on community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) for the conservation of CITES-listed species was organized by the Austrian Ministry of the Environment and the European Commission in Vienna, Austria, in May 2010. Its aim was to provide the necessary knowledge base for a broad policy discussion within the European Union on the relevance of local conservation programmes for CITES to achieve the goals as set out in its current Strategic Vision 2008-2013 (Res. Conf. 14.2). Case study presentations came from Africa, Central Asia and South America, with four working groups addressing a range of issues including characteristics of successful CBNRM programmes; income generation and conservation implications of CITES species listings for CBNRM; impacts of trade restrictions; and the relevance to CBNRM of international biodiversity goals, policies and initiatives. The symposium conclusions should be helpful in identifying options to enhance the CITES Strategic Vision post-2013, particularly the effectiveness of Goal 1 (“Ensure compliance with and implementation and enforcement of the Convention”). It also identifies important links between CITES and other relevant MEAs and provides an opportunity to enhance international policy coherence regarding local communities as important stakeholders and conservation partners.

Ce rapport examine le statut de conservation de l’ensemble des poissons marins autochtones de la mer Méditerranée. Il repose sur les évaluations de 513 espèces et 6 sous-espèces réalisées selon la méthodologie de la Liste Rouge de l’UICN. En outre, le rapport identifie les espèces de poissons marins menacées d’extinction à l’échelle régionale, de sorte que des mesures de conservation adéquates soient mises en place afin d’améliorer leur statut.

The papers and abstracts in this volume are the outcome of the conference on Island Invasives: Eradication and Management, held at Tamaki Campus, University of Auckland, New Zealand. This conference had "islands" and "eradication of invasive species" as the focus, with emphasis on the work done and results or learning achieved. The conference endeavoured to cover the full breadth of this work by breaking the subject down to: gaining political, community, financial and physical support; eradication techniques tested and used; the immediate results of eradication operations; the longer-term outcomes as seen in the biota of the island and among communities involved; and biosecurity measures for such islands from planning to implementation.

Protected areas play a major role in reducing climate changing carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. Fifteen percent of the world's terrestrial carbon stock - 312 gigatonnes - are stored in protected areas around the world. Protected areas also serve as natural buffers against climate impacts and other disasters, providing space for floodwaters to disperse, stabilizing soil against landslides and blocking storm surges. And protected areas can keep natural resources healthy and productive so they can withstand the impacts of climate change and continue to provide the food, clean water, shelter and income communities rely upon for survival.
Limits to adaptation : a review of limitations relevant to the project “Building Resilience to Climate Change – Coastal Southeast Asia”

There are a multitude of limiting factors preventing ecosystems, communities, organisms and individuals from adapting to change. Ecological and physical limits comprise the natural limitations to adaptation, associated largely with the natural environment, ranging from ecosystem thresholds to geographical and geological limitations. Climate change will require many disciplines and capabilities to come together to understand the full extent of the effects and to analyse and develop potential solutions. Support for climate change policy by all stakeholders in the coastal zone is crucial and the ability of managers to generate support for adaptation actions will be vital for the success of those responses.
