Defining ecologically or biologically significant areas in the open oceans and deep seas : analysis, tools, resources and illustrations

A background document for the CBD expert workshop. This document reviews the description of each of the scientific criteria and comments on their potential applications, discusses a variety of ways in which the scientific community understands these criteria, and how they can be used as a foundation for informing future decisions regarding the marine environment of the open oceans and deep seas. An important component of the document is a set of practical illustrations (Annex 2) to increase our understanding of how the seven scientific criteria can be applied. These provide a range of examples considering species, habitats and recurrent oceanographic features using a variety of techniques ranging from field surveys, satellite tracking of tagged animals and remote sensing, to sophisticated modelling and range prediction. These illustrations are not meant as proposals for specific management measures, but are simply presented as examples of various scientific methods and techniques relevant to each criterion.

Después de circular los análisis nacionales en cada país para su revisión, TRAFFIC ha producido este reporte regional que sintetiza la información contenida en cada uno de los análisis nacionales, e incluye recomendaciones para el fortalecimiento de capacidades regionales. Además, este documento incluye una síntesis de la estructura legal y formas funcionales en las que el comercio de vida silvestre se maneja en los países de CAFTA-DR. Se incluye también un resumen de las recomendaciones y estrategias orientadas a la reducción del comercio ilegal e insostenible de la vida silvestre a través de la mejora de capacidades, habilidades técnicas y conocimiento entre las autoridades de aplicación de la ley, así como otro personal a cargo del manejo de la vida silvestre y la aplicación de las leyes en la materia. TRAFFIC espera que este análisis proporcione un marco útil para guiar el trabajo de nuestra organización en la región, en cooperación con los países de CAFTA-DR; así como un espacio para promover la comunicación y facilitar la cooperación entre las autoridades clave responsables de la implementación y aplicación de las leyes en materia de vida silvestre y su manejo. Este reporte regional será del dominio público, por lo que no atribuye las necesidades de capacitación, vacíos o retos a ningún país en particular sin el consentimiento de su gobierno.
Wildlife trade control : CAFTA-DR Regional Gap Analysis Report
   

After vetting country-specific assessments with each country, TRAFFIC has produced this regional report that synthesizes information from each of the six country assessments and makes recommendations for regional capacity building approaches. This analysis includes an overview of the legal structure and functional ways that wildlife trade is managed in CAFTA-DR countries. The analysis also includes a synthesis of recommendations and strategies focused on reducing illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade by improving the capacity, technical skills and knowledge among authorities, enforcement staff and other persons involved in wildlife management and enforcement of wildlife laws. This analysis will provide both a useful framework for guiding TRAFFIC’s capacity building work in the region in cooperation with CAFTA-DR countries and will also provide a way to promote communication and facilitate cooperation among key authorities responsible for wildlife law enforcement and management. This regional report will be in the public domain but will not attribute capacity needs, gaps or challenges to any particular country without that government’s approval

The Red List of trees of Central Asia

Many of the world’s fruit and nut trees are seriously threatened with extinction, according to the newly released Red List of Trees of Central Asia. The list is published by Fauna and Flora International (FFI) in collaboration with BGCI as part of the Global Trees Campaign. The report identifies 44 tree species in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan as globally threatened with extinction, such as Pyrus korshinskyi, pictured left, a pear species identified as Critically Endangered. Many of these species occur in the unique fruit and nut forests of Central Asia – an estimated 90% of which have been destroyed in the past 50 years.

O guia que tem em mãos inspira-se e segue a linha de trabalho da importante obra «Sharing Power» publicada pela UICN/CEESP e pelo IIED. O guia fornece uma versão sintetizada e cremos que prática das principais etapas do processo de governança partilhada, visando, em particular os actores das Áreas Marinhas Protegidas (AMPs) da África Ocidental. De entre eles, desejamos, sobretudo, despertar o interesse dos funcionários de estado encarregados da gestão das AMPs, dos membros das comunidades e agrupamentos locais e dos parceiros para o desenvolvimento e melhoramento da gestão das AMPs, tais como os responsáveis por projectos nas áreas sociais, ambientais ou do desenvolvimento sustentável. Este guia pretende ser uma ferramenta de referência compacta, que permita aos utilizadores reencontrarem-se rapidamente nas várias etapas da implementação da governança partilhada e de assimilarem ou de reverem os seus conceitos e etapas para os porem em prática no terreno, de forma eficaz e equitativa. Tendo a preocupação de continuar a ser tão prático quanto possível, os quadros e ilustrações fornecidos baseiam-se em exemplos concretos da África Ocidental.

Esta publicación de la Lista Roja resume los resultados de los mamíferos terrestres mediterráneos, al tiempo que ofrece la primera visión general del estado de conservación de estas especies para cumplir las directrices de catalogación regional de la Lista Roja de la UICN. Identifica así las especies que están amenazadas de extinción a nivel regional a fin de que se puedan realizar las acciones de conservación apropiadas para mejorar su estado.
