This documentary demonstrates that it is possible to rehabilitate large-scale damaged ecosystems, to restore ecosystem functions in areas where they have been lost, to fundamentally improve the lives of people who have been trapped in poverty for generations and to sequester carbon naturally. This approach has been dramatically proven on the Loess Plateau in China, the highland area spanning some 640,000 square km in north central China. It is the birthplace of the Han Chinese, headwaters of The Yellow River and home to a new environmental and economic paradigm: A degraded ecosystem of more than 35,000 square km of land now teems with life and supports the sustainable economic, social and agricultural activities of its people.

The booklet provides a range of case studies and other materials to make the forest sector more biodiversity-friendly, and socially beneficial. It addresses the linkages between forestry, biodiversity, and development/poverty reduction. The summaries and examples included in this booklet show how biodiversity and sustainable economic development can go hand in hand. The primary target audiences for the guide are government officers and decision-makers in the various government agencies related to forestry (at global, regional, national and local levels) as well as development practitioners. The materials presented can also be useful to corporate and NGO planners.

The main objective of this work is to provide an introduction and sense of direction into the complicated world of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES). It by no means intends to serve as a comprehensive overview of this vast field. It provides one entry point for engaging in PES, and was designed to fit into the broader Livelihoods and Landscapes (LLS) strategy, as developed by IUCN’s Forest Conservation Programme.

The Livelihoods and Landscapes Strategy (LLS) seeks to influence the ways in which forests are managed and used. It intends to leverage real and meaningful improvements in the livelihoods of the rural poor, enhance biodiversity conservation, and ensure the sustainable supply of forest goods and services. These goals are founded on a strong recognition of the close relationship between people’s economic wellbeing, and the status and integrity of forests. As described in this publication, economic factors have an extremely important influence on forest livelihoods and landscapes. The Markets & Incentives theme of LLS aims to identify how economic and financial tools can be used to support more sustainable forest use and management, while also increasing the incomes and livelihood security of the rural poor.

The objectives of the first edition of the Pangani situation analysis included identifying the resources that occupy the Pangani River Basin (PRB) and the processes and events that affect them, and identifying a series of broad action areas wherein interventions may feasibly be delivered. A second edition was needed to take into account the operation of the Water Resource Management Act in July 2009. This revised edition includes updated content primarily pertaining to the administrative structure, institutional arrangements, water law and policy, as well as the impact of the situation analysis in developing the Pangani River Basin Management Project, but the remainder of the situation analysis has not been changed.

Maples are keystone species in northern temperate forests and are much valued as a source of revenue for products such as maple syrup and timber. As with many other tree species, maples are under threat in the wild primarily as a result of forest degradation and destruction, as well as of climate change. This report presents a review of the conservation status in the wild of maples worldwide.

The Tanguar Haor, in northeastern Bangladesh, is part of a wetland/floodplain complex. During the monsoon season it is entirely under water. In the dry season waters recede into the rivers and cover about 25–30% of the area. These bodies of water attract many waterfowl during the winter season and are also an important breeding ground of many species of fish. Tanguar Haor provides immediate subsistence and livelihoods to some 40,000 people residing in its periphery but the standards of living are very poor, and these wetlands are exploited in unsustainable ways. The Bangladesh government has introduced the concept of “wise-use” to encourage the sustainable use of the Tanguar Haor resources. The beautiful photographs in this book show the pristine and undisturbed natural beauty of this spot, as well as its interaction with people living around it.
