Grandes aires protégées des zones sahelo-sahariennes : quelle contribution à la conservation?
   

L’étude porte sur l’analyse des différents sites, les problèmes rencontrés sur chaque site en passant en revue tous les aspects de leur gestion, l’intérêt du statut actuel (ou prévu) en fonction des objectifs de conservation assignés à ces aires protégées, l’analyse de l’adéquation de la législation de chacun des pays concernés par rapport aux propositions et aux recommandations faites. Au total, l’efficacité des modes de gestion dans l’ensemble des réserves apparaît faible. Il y a partout des lacunes à combler au niveau de la sécurité juridique des aires, de l’efficacité des institutions de gestion, de la gestion financière, des compétences du personnel, de la qualité des infrastructures, des financements. Le processus de gestion lui-même (planification, prise de décision et participation des communautés, programmes d’éducation et de sensibilisation, connaissance et matérialisation des limites, implication des acteurs des secteurs public et privé, inventaire des ressources naturelles, recherche, suivi et évaluation…) est souvent embryonnaire.

The Delos Initiative focuses on the sacred natural sites in developed countries throughout the world. Its main purpose is to help in maintaining both the sanctity and the biodiversity of these sites, through the understanding of the complex relationship between spiritual/cultural and natural values. This publication includes all presentations made at the Second Workshop of The Delos Initiative, which took place in Ouranoupolis in 2007. All speeches delivered and case studies presented at the workshop have been included, as well as conclusions and lessons learned.

Analysis and engagement with partners working on ecosystem services transactions, policies and laws over the past 10 years have demonstrated a clear need to better understand the legal and institutional frameworks that have the potential to promote or hinder the development of payments for ecosystem services (PES) schemes, as well as the complex legal considerations that affect ecosystem services projects. This report has been prepared to analyze the legal and institutional frameworks of water-related PES schemes and projects in four Andean countries: Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia and Peru.
Primates in peril : the world's 25 most endangered primates, 2008-2010
   

This report, compiled by 85 experts from across the world, reveals that nearly half of all primate species are now in danger of becoming extinct from destruction of tropical forests, illegal wildlife trade and commercial bushmeat hunting. The list includes five primate species from Madagascar, six from Africa, 11 from Asia, and three from Central and South America, all of which are the most in need of urgent conservation action.

Increasing incidence and intensity of natural disasters and climate change are having over-arching impacts on the environment. Sustainable development is being undermined. Ecological services and their indirect economic values are frequently omitted from assessments. Mainstreaming ecosystem concerns – both ecological and economical – and integrating them into disaster management is essential. This multi-volume manual attempts to provide background information and guidance for integrating environmental concerns into disaster management. Volume 3 presents summarised resource material that is useful for field practitioners. The material ranges from technical papers on biodiversity and economic valuation to the description of tools such as Rapid Environmental Impact Assessments (RES) and CRISTAL (for community-based risk assessment). It also discusses international principles and frameworks, and contains various guidelines.
Risks from maritime traffic to biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea : Identification of issues and possible responses

This report is based on discussions among maritime experts and draws on the conclusions of a workshop that was held in Istanbul in 2007. It focuses on identifying threats to biodiversity resulting from international shipping activities and the transportation of hazardous cargoes in the Mediterranean Sea; on proposing appropriate responses to eliminate or mitigate these threats; and on examining these threats in the context of the existing Mediterranean governance framework and international agreements on marine environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.
Aquaculture : Responsible practices and certification
   

Over the past decade, there has been growing concern among international stakeholders, particularly in Mediterranean countries, about aquaculture product quality, knowledge management, interaction with the environment, technology and systems, fish health and welfare, management of biological lifecycles and sustainable feed production within the aquaculture sector. This publication is a result of a constructive debate among stakeholders. It focuses on codes of conduct and better aquaculture practices, bases for certification schemes, types of certification schemes, and the ways to certify sustainability.

All people, regardless of where they live, depend upon the existence of healthy marine ecosystems. While the role that Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) can play in promoting the health of the oceans and seas has been widely acknowledged, progress on building a network of MPAs has been slow to date. This can be in part explained by the fact that MPAs involve a host of issues that go much further than conservation alone. For conservationists and natural resource managers, identifying the conservation actions needed to establish MPA networks can therefore be difficult.

A survey of tourists and tour operators in the Egyptian Red Sea region shows that the industry often misperceives its clients’ environmental sensitivity, putting its own business at risk. Climate change is a growing threat to the tourism industry by making destinations less attractive and jeopardizing major sources of income. The awareness of tourists towards climate change and other environmental issues is likely to be a major driver of their future holiday choices.
Multi-stakeholder design of forest governance and accountability arrangements in Equator province, Democratic Republic of Congo

The IUCN initiative “Strengthening Voices for Better Choices” (SVBC) is piloting improved forest governance arrangements, among others in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This study was conducted in the Equator Province to try to answer questions about good forest governance, accountability arrangements, and the potential of SVBC-established structures to improve forest governance, among others. It also provides recommendations for further action research on accountability arrangements.
Guidelines on biofuels and invasive species
   

The rapid development of biofuels to support greenhouse gas reductions, agricultural development and energy security has often occurred without adequate consideration of the threat of biological invasions. Some biofuel feedstocks and associated pests pose a serious threat of biological invasion, especially when grown beyond their native ranges or in modified settings. This situation puts rural livelihoods, economic profitability and the environment at risk, and threatens the sustainability of the biofuels sector as a whole. These guidelines outline step-by-step recommendations for interventions to minimise risks of biological invasions along the biofuels supply chain.

Out of all the biological carbon (or green carbon) captured in the world, over half is captured by marine living organisms --- hence it is called "blue carbon". Although emissions reductions are currently at the centre of the climate change debate, the critical role that oceans and ocean ecosystems play has been vastly overlooked. The objective of this report is to highlight their essential function in maintaining our climate and to assist policy makers to mainstream an oceans agenda into national and international climate change initiatives.
