This report presents a summary of the presentations and the main outputs from the working groups of the workshop “Harmonisation of Tentative Lists in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe” held on Vilm from May 9th to 13th, 2007. The report is complemented by a CD-ROM containing the workshop's presentations and the most relevant reference papers (see Annex for an overview of the documents). It is a contribution to the implementation of the Action Plan for Europe adopted by the World Heritage Committee in 2006 (Decision WHC-06/30.COM/19/11A.1, Periodic Report and Action Plan, Europe 2005-2006 - World Heritage Series n; 20)
Regional conservation strategy for the cheetah and African wild dog in southern Africa
   

The strategic plan for the species’ conservation in southern Africa recognises the need to (i) build capacity within the region in all fields related to the conservation of cheetah and wild dog, (ii) improve knowledge of the conservation biology of both species, (iii) ensure that information collected is made available to all stakeholders, (iv) minimise conflict and promote coexistence between cheetah, wild dogs and people; (v) minimise the adverse effects of land development and promote best land use practice for cheetah and wild dogs, (vi) ensure that political commitment is obtained; (vii) review, and where necessary revise, existing legislation and policy at international, national and local levels; and (viii) promote the development and implementation of national conservation plans for both species. This last point is important because almost all conservation effort is enacted within national policies, under the jurisdiction of national wildlife authorities. For this reason, the regional strategy was deliberately developed in a format that would facilitate translation into national conservation action plans.

This project attempts to profile the disaster that took place in Neelum Valley, AJK, Pakistan. Its goal is to strengthen decision-making tools by identifying the main land use factors and land use strategies that affect the vulnerability of communities in Neelum Valley.
Conference proceedings : Biodiversity in European development cooperation, Paris, 19-21 September 2006
   
This document gathers the proceedings of the Biodiversity and European Development Cooperation (BEDC) Conference. The aim of the BEDC Conference was to contribute to transforming political commitments into concrete actions by developing recommendations for the European Commission (EC) and European Union (EU) Member States on how to pro-actively address the integration of biodiversity concerns into development cooperation programmes and policies. The BEDC Conference was not therefore an event by environmentalists for environmentalists, but rather aspired to bring together development cooperation representatives and environmentalists to jointly pave the way forward.

Loin d'être un événement organisé par des spécialistes de l'environnement pour des spécialistes de l'environnement, la conférence a aspiré à rassembler des représentants de la coopération au développement et de l'environnement pour qu'ensemble ils préparent l'avenir.

This report presents a review of the conservation status in the wild of oaks worldwide, undertaken by the IUCN/SSC Global Tree Specialist Group.

A strategy for addressing issues of aquatic invasive alien species in the Lower Mekong Basin

Like most natural ecosystems across Asia, the wetlands in the Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) are under threat from various human activities and from invasive alien species (IAS). Currently, major pathways for introduction of IAS in the region include aquaculture, horticultural and ornamental fish trades. Dams, urbanisation, expansion of agriculture, trans-boundary road development and other rapid development activities are exacerbating the spread of IAS. This report recommends strategic responses to address issues related to aquatic IAS in the LMB. It also recommends maximum participation at national, regional and international levels is essential and suggests possible participants at the three levels. It also identifies the Global Invasive Species Database (GISD) (http://www.issg. org/database/) as the single most important resource for use with respect to IAS.

This study forms part of the Pangani River Basin Flow Assessment Initiative. The aims of the socio-economic baseline assessment were: to provide an overview of the basin and its economy, to provide a description of the livelihoods of people living in proximity to rivers in the basin, and to estimate the contribution that aquatic ecosystem resources make to people’s livelihoods.

This report forms part of the Pangani River Basin Flow Assessment Initiative. It is based on a health assessment of the river during the wet and dry seasons, together with existing Pangani Basin Water Board water-quality data collected at key points along the river.
Gestion des aires marines protégées : un manuel pour l'Océan Indien Occidental
   

Au moment de la production de ce manuel, on compte plus de 70 sites individuels (nommés au niveau national et international) dans l’Océan Indien Occidental (OIO), parmi lesquels une certaine forme de gestion existe. La plupart de ces sites sont gérés sous mandat offi ciel du gouvernement, tandis que d’autres correspondent à des arrangements traditionnels ou locaux ; par ailleurs, ces sites correspondent à un éventail de protection allant des zones de ‘non pêche’ complétement protégées à des zones à usages mutiples. Dans la région, chaque pays a maintenant une ou plusieurs AMPs, et le nombre est en augmentation. Le Manuel est conçu pour compléter et s’ajouter à la Formation Régionale sur la Gestion des Aires Marines Protégées dans l’Océan Indien Occidental. Il complète également le guide intitulé Formation pour une gestion durable des Aires Marines Protégées : Un manuel de formation pour les gestionaires d’AMPs. Le Manuel représente un premier support dans la recherche d’informations sur des problèmes auxquels les gestionnaires et les professionnels d’AMPs doivent faire face dans les opérations quotarget_idiennes.
Mto Pangani Na Mfumo Wake : Ripoti ya Hali ya Bonde -2007 Tanzania
   

This publication has been prepared as part of the Flow Assessment Component of the Pangani River Basin Management Project. Its aim is to collect and synthesize present knowledge on the Pangani River system and its users, and to help promote an integrated approach to future water-allocation decisions. It reports on the condition of the river system in the 2006 dry and wet seasons and identifies key areas of concern. It also highlights the relationships between the river and the people of the basin, reports on their wellbeing and begins to explore their sensitivity to changes in flow and ecosystem condition. The knowledge will be used to guide future research on the river and its users, and to develop a simple decision-making tool that can aid decisions on a fair balance between water development and protection of the river’s resources.

With the highest percentage of threatened sharks and rays in the world, the Mediterranean region is in need of regional planning and policy development for the conservation and sustainable management of chondrichthyan fishes. This third report in the series of Mediterranean Red List Assessments presents the findings of an expert workshop at which 71 Mediterranean species of sharks, rays and chimaeras (cartilaginous fishes) were assessed using the IUCN Red List categories and criteria. This assessment will be used for further development of priority research, conservation and management actions for the region.
