Taming the tiger trade : China's markets for wild and captive tiger products since the 1993 domestic trade ban

TRAFFIC's findings in this report provide strong evidence that China's trade ban has been effective at reducing the market for Tiger products, particularly traditional medicines. Still, illegal trade remains a threat. China's progress in Tiger conservation, especially Tiger trade, would almost certainly be undone if China's market for Tiger products were re-opened.

It is today widely acknowledged both by the development and conservation communities that a vital relationship exists between the sound management of ecosystems, the determinants of poverty and the effectiveness of poverty alleviation efforts. Although levels of vulnerability remain high in urban areas, the relationship is closer still in rural settings where the majority of poor remain largely dependent upon the productivity and sustainability of natural ecosystems. This publication is the result of any analysis undertaken under the aegis of the Asian Development Bank’s Poverty and Environment Programme which aims to accelerate learning about poverty–environment relationships by gathering new knowledge on effective approaches to environmental management and poverty reduction. Using sixteen Asian-based case studies to document the relationships between poverty, health and natural resources management, it seeks to analyse lessons that can be drawn and used to achieve improved environmental management and poverty reduction.

Partiendo de la política ambiental de cada uno de los países, se detalla en forma pormenorizada la legislación sectorial en la materia en cada uno de los países y la medida en la cual el concepto de diversidad biológica ha sido incorporado en los sistemas de EIA de cada uno de ellos. La publicación se completa con un análisis de algunos casos relevantes y con un anexo documental que contiene las resoluciones del Convenio de Diversidad Biológica más importante en la materia.

Current discussions over the “Certificate of Origin, Source and Legal Provenance” include the legal and practical implications associated with tracking the flow of genetic resources. Knowing what is where, how it got there, and whether conditions and restrictions were complied with, is a critical aspect if an ABS regime is to be effective in its implementation. This book provides insights into options and components for the development of a national/international system for the tracking and monitoring of genetic resources to ensure compliance with the ABS provisions of the CBD. It includes discussions addressing the practical options for such a system, its costs and economic impacts, and its possible role in the ABS framework.

The Delos Initiative focuses on the sacred natural sites in developed countries throughout the world (such as Australia, Canada, the European countries, Japan, New Zealand and the United States of America). Its main purpose is to help in maintaining both the sanctity and the biodiversity of these sites, through the understanding of the complex relationship between spiritual/cultural and natural values. This publication includes all presentations made at the First Workshop of The Delos Initiative, which took place in Montserrat in 2006. All speeches delivered and case studies presented at the workshop have been included, as well as conclusions and lessons learned.
Overview of the conservation status of cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyans) in the Mediterranean Sea

With the highest percentage of threatened sharks and rays in the world, the Mediterranean region is in need of regional planning and policy development for the conservation and sustainable management of chondrichthyan fishes. This third report in the series of Mediterranean Red List Assessments presents the findings of an expert workshop at which 71 Mediterranean species of sharks, rays and chimaeras (cartilaginous fishes) were assessed using the IUCN Red List categories and criteria. This assessment will be used for further development of priority research, conservation and management actions for the region.

Aquaculture currently faces a significant challenge: how to fulfill the expectation of alleviating the pressure that fishing fleets exercise on fish populations without leading to environmental problems. It is particularly expected to develop widely in the near future in the Mediterranean’s European, Southern and Eastern countries. In order to avoid potential environmental disruption issues, it is important that the aquaculture industry be provided with clear and user friendly guidelines to ensure its sustainable development. The objective of these guidelines is to propose recommendations for responsible and sustainable aquaculture, giving support to decision makers, aquaculture producers and stakeholders in the Mediterranean region.

Asia-Pacific guidelines for the development of national ESD Indicators
   

This publication aims to provide stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region with a practical resource from which to develop an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) indicator framework at the national level. The document highlights how learning, commitment and ownership among stakeholders can be maximized. It does not include an indicator framework itself. Rather, the resource is an extensive platform from which ESD stakeholders can work collaboratively to develop a relevant and meaningful indicator framework based upon national ESD goals and priorities.
