It shows how the prevailing currents and winds carried the oil slick north, polluting more than 150 km of Lebanese shoreline and releasing about 15,000 tones of toxic fuel into the Mediterranean.

This interactive CD was developed in conjunction with a Country Environmental Profile for Somalia by the Eastern Africa Regional Office of IUCN, for the EC Somalia Operations Office. The objective of developing this CD and Somalia’s CEP was to “provide environmental, social and economic information to the EC Somalia Operations Office and the Somalia Administrations to guide the identification of specifications on environmental objectives and benchmarks for the EC Cooperation activities in its 2008-2013 indicative programmes for Somalia".

Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) are important instruments for conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. CEPA provides the link from science and ecology to people’s social and economic reality. It supplies the oil for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and deals with the processes that motivate and mobilize individual and collective action. It comprises a range of social instruments including information exchange, dialogue, education, and marketing. The toolkit has been developed by the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication (CEC) for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity. It is meant for CBD focal points and those responsible for the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAP). The toolkit offers information to update knowledge and skills with fact sheets, checklists and practical examples from all over the world.

The Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) currently includes three species of chondrichthyan fishes on its Appendices, in recognition of their unfavourable conservation status and need for concerted international conservation measures. The primary purpose of this study was to prepare a database of migratory chondrichthyan fishes (the sharks, skates, rays and chimaeras) and to use it to identify potential species that would benefit from a CMS listing. The secondary purpose was to provide a pilot study that can be used as a starting point for developing the methodology and outputs of future taxonomic reviews under CMS. It is envisaged that the Scientific Council will also consider this as a more general discussion document and make recommendations for improvements before any other such reviews are undertaken.

Some of the most important decisions in wildlife management in Africa revolve around elephants. Where elephant densities increase the impact of elephants on their habitats and other species may also increase. Depending on local values and/or the land-use objectives, this impact is often seen as undesirable. Information about attempts to control wild populations of elephants is generally not readily accessible to the relevant managers and conservation authorities in Africa. The main objective of this document is to make available lessons learned from the past and from ongoing efforts to manage the negative ecological impact of African elephants, and to provide a summary of the main technical considerations and pros and cons of the different management options available.

Mangroves are among the most valuable ecosystems providing food and protection for a large number of marine and land-based organisms, livelihoods for coastal populations, and protection from ocean swell and other extreme weather events for low-lying coastal areas. In the wake of the 2004 Indian ocean tsunami there was a strong realization that much of the future devastation to human life and property could be avoided through the existence of healthy, properly-managed and conserved mangroves. In collaboration with other stakeholders, IUCN launched Mangroves for the Future, a partnership-led initiative to encourage investment in coastal ecosystem conservation. This report presents an overview of this initiative, the case for increased investment, and a framework for its implementation over the coming five years.

An environmental flow is the water regime provided within a river, wetland or coastal zone to maintain ecosystems and their benefits where there are competing water uses and where flows are regulated. Pioneering efforts in South Africa, Australia and the United States have shown that the process to establish them poses great challenges. Second in the series of the Water & Nature Initiative, this guide draws extensively on the experiences in these countries to offer hands-on advice and practical guidance on technical issues for this emerging issue on the water resource agenda.
