Aquaculture currently faces a significant challenge: how to fulfill the expectation of alleviating the pressure that fishing fleets exercise on fish populations without leading to environmental problems. It is particularly expected to develop widely in the near future in the Mediterranean’s European, Southern and Eastern countries. In order to avoid potential environmental disruption issues, it is important that the aquaculture industry be provided with clear and user friendly guidelines to ensure its sustainable development. The objective of these guidelines is to propose recommendations for responsible and sustainable aquaculture, giving support to decision makers, aquaculture producers and stakeholders in the Mediterranean region.

Fewer than 11% of CBD Parties have adopted substantive ABS law, and nearly all of these are developing countries, focusing almost entirely on the ‘access’ side of the equation. Most of the CBD’s specific ABS obligations, however, relate to the other side of the equation – benefit sharing. This book considers the full range of ABS obligations, and how existing tools in user countries’ national law can be used to achieve the CBD’s third objective. It examines the laws of those user countries which have either declared that their ABS obligations are satisfied by existing national law, or have begun legislative development; the requirements, weaknesses and gaps in achieving benefit-sharing objectives; and the ways in which new or existing legal tools can be applied to these requirements.

Cabrera Medaglia, Jorge A. | López Silva, Christian

This book provides a systematic analysis of the requirements of access law, both the CBD requirements and the basic requirements of enforceable legislation. Often key legal issues that have a significant impact on enforceability of ABS agreements are not addressed in national legislation, therefore, this book addresses these issues with the aim to recognize and understand the nature of the legal impediments that must be addressed for the drafting of functional ABS legislation. Although the book is premised on the issues of access, it inevitably refers to corresponding issues of benefit sharing that are relevant for articulating the legal principles that inform a functional ABS system. Its conclusions look at particular legal concepts that, if accepted, could form the basis for functional ABS systems that respond to the identified concerns.

The objective of these guidelines is to evolve a systematically designed common approach for rehabilitation of a vegetation buffer stable enough to absorb the devastating energy of natural disasters. These Guidelines provide implementers with a quick reference to the procedures. For a more thorough and technical overview of the methodology it is necessary to refer to the technical guidelines below.

Viet Nam is a very beautiful country made up of mountains, forests, lush river deltas and wide expanses of coasts and beaches. But with one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Viet Nam is undergoing major changes. Viet Nam of the future will be very different from that of today, not only because of its rapid economic growth, but also due to the high vulnerability of its river deltas and coastlines to climate change. This Strategy has been prepared in response to these challenges.

The need to establish a coastal green belt following the post-tsunami scenario has led to unregulated rehabilitation work. The objective of these technical guidelines is to evolve a systematically designed common approach for rehabilitation of a vegetation buffer stable enough to absorb the devastating energy of natural disasters. This publication provides the methodology for prospective implementers with a sequentially set-out process of rehabilitation of the greenbelt, including information on procedures, choices of plant species, costing and legal issues.

The Hima is a traditional system of resource tenure that has been practised for more than 1400 years in the Arabian Peninsula. It is the most widespread and longstanding indigenous/traditional conservation institution in the Middle East, and perhaps on Earth! The Arabic word “hima” literally means “a protected area”. In pre-Islamic times, access to this place was declared forbidden by the individual or group who owned it. Later its meaning evolved to signify a rangeland reserve, a piece of land set aside seasonally to allow regeneration. This publication introduces readers to the concept of this traditional system and brings insights to the revived use of this indigenous institution.

In the Mediterranean region alone, there are more than 4400 protected areas, of which 67% have been assigned an IUCN category. This publication analyses the use and interpretation of the different protected areas categories in the Mediterranean, gathers the ideas and proposals of agencies and other key stakeholders in the Mediterranean region, and includes the results of the IUCN International Summit in Almeria. It aims to serve as a stimulus to assess the options for improvement of legislation where needed, and for the categorization of new areas and its application to the already existing ones.

Azsarenau Sochiyay Inkar Kijyay Kum Kijyay is a significant publication for ESD in Urdu language due its concentration on the philosophical dimensions of sustainable development and critical analysis of the current unsustainable practices in the world on the one hand. On the other hand it translates this high order thinking into practical ideas for training programmes of teachers and trainers and also its implementation in the classroom settings.

An environmental flow is the water regime provided within a river, wetland or coastal zone to maintain ecosystems and their benefits where there are competing water uses and where flows are regulated. Pioneering efforts in South Africa, Australia and the United States have shown that the process to establish them poses great challenges. Second in the series of the Water & Nature Initiative, this guide draws extensively on the experiences in these countries to offer hands-on advice and practical guidance on technical issues for this emerging issue on the water resource agenda.

Over 40% of the primary forest in Lao PDR remains but this is under increasing pressure. Floristic diversity is poorly known and botanical work almost non-existent. This checklist is the outcome of a programme aimed at training some 30 Laotians participants in tropical taxonomy through field work and herbarium base work. One of the outputs of this project is this checklist which has more than 4800 species from 232 families. Of these, 3,688 are supported by at least one of the 9,500 specimens recorded in the National Species Database – records for the remaining species are based on reliable literature sources. The database is expected to be available on-line in the near future.

Amphibian populations are disappearing from habitats all around the world. The crisis caught us by surprise - and only now are we able to fully grasp the scope of the situation. Around a third of amphibian species are threatened with extinction - mass extinctions of this magnitude have not been seen since the time of the dinosaurs. The crisis shows us that the world has changed. Traditional threats to species and ecosystems - such as habitat loss and pollution - are being compounded by new threats such as climate change and emerging disease. This is not simply an amphibian problem, but a human welfare issue. We need to act quickly to save the amphibians and the ecosystems that support them and provide us with clean drinking water, clean air, and support the quality of life that many take for granted.

The Cross River gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli) is recognized by IUCN as Critically Endangered, and is the most threatened taxon of ape in Africa. Work during the last two decades has revealed that fewer than 300 Cross River gorillas may remain, spread across an area of about 12,000 km2. The outlook for these apes is far from hopeless, but a concerted and sustained effort will be required if their long-term survival is to be assured. Implementation of the recommendations in this plan would significantly increase the survival prospects for this species.

This volume, the proceedings of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law 2004 Nairobi Colloquium, surveys global experience in implementing land use policies along the sustainable development continuum. Some chapters discuss the challenges of implementing sustainable land use policies in different regions, revealing problems common to all jurisdictions and highlighting other more unique obstacles to sustainability. Other contributions address new approaches to sustainable land use, such as reforms to property rights regimes and environmental law. Comparative approaches enrich the analysis.

The conservation outlook of these endangered apes will improve significantly if forestry companies are prepared to make a few changes to management policies in logging concessions. These guidelines outline specific recommendations for reducing the impact of commercial logging on wild apes, many of which can be implemented within the framework of sustainable, reduced-impact logging at little or no additional cost. Advantages will also accrue for logging companies which rapidly implement these measures, allowing them to be recognized as 'ape-friendly' timber producers.

While the business case for climate change is now widely recognized, the business case for biodiversity has only to a limited extent been addressed. However, "biodiversity" or the ecosystem services that are supporting our way of living, bear characteristics of becoming the next challenge for financial institutions. This report provides a detailed analysis of the business case for financial institutions from a risk perspective. It focuses notably on what the specific implications are for the commercial banking sector, asset managers and investors, and (re)insurance firms in terms of exposure to biodiversity business risks. A general procedure provides an overview of available tools and best-management-practices to enable financial institutions to mitigate any adverse impacts proactively. The report also identifies a number of biodiversity business opportunities that can be captured by financial institutions that make sense both from a financial as well as a conservation perspective. A number of recommendations are presented to both the financial sector, as well as to other stakeholders, such as NGOs, governments and multilateral institutions on how to further build and communicate the business case for biodiversity to the financial community.
