Disclosure requirements : ensuring mutual supportiveness between the WTO TRIPS agreement and the CBD

There is an urgent need for concrete steps to foster the mutual supportiveness of the objectives embodied in the Convention on Biological Diversity and multilateral trade rules under the World Trade Organization. Intellectual property is one area of debate where such efforts could be undertaken. More specifically, the question of including requirements to disclose the origin or legal provenance of genetic resources and traditional knowledge into intellectual property rights applications has begun to surface in national, regional and international discussions and negotiations. Written by a wide variety of leading thinkers in the field, the compilation of short essays and articles included in this publication provide technical input and proposals which should serve to build an analytical foundation to promote and stimulate legislative, regulatory and policy processes on disclosure at the national and international levels.

Coral reef degradation in the Indian Ocean : status report 2005

Since the 1998 coral bleaching and mortality, which affected reefs throughout the tropics, a number of projects dealing with research, monitoring and management of coral reefs have been conducted. A number of these projects have been carried out under the CORDIO Program in the Indian Ocean where coral reefs have been severely impacted by bleaching related mortality and other anthropogenic influences. CORDIO’s third status report describes the condition of coral reefs throughout the central and western Indian Ocean and presents the results of several targeted research projects conducted within the last 18 months.

Transboundary conservation areas are environmentally endangered regions that sprawl across international borders and contain multiple protected areas. Recent studies estimate that there are now 188 transboundary conservation areas in 112 countries, making up about 17 percent of the designated protected areas around the world. This book specifically examines 28 of these areas, found across all continents, from Asia to Antarctica, and in several oceans. Eminent scientists and conservationists contribute detailed histories of the areas, from the birth of the initial conservation efforts to the latest research that reveals new regions and assesses the success of the programs to protect existing ones. This handbook is intended as a pracitcal user-guide for practioners and is expected to fill an important gap in the management tools and guidelines available to UNHCR staff and implementing partners, in particular.
Forest management in refugee and returnee situations : a handbook of sound practices
   

Few occasions rival the circumstances experienced in a refugee situation. At the same time, overcrowded refugee camps often have an immediate effect on the surrounding environment. The urgent need for building materials, wood for cooking and heat fuel, natural remedies for sickness and food for precious livestock all have direct consequences on forests and woodlands in particular.

Experience shows that much can be done to benefit refugees while caring about the surrounding environment. The use of fuel efficient stoves, for example, can reduce the time people spend gathering firewood, reduce the risk of attack when outside the camp, and reduce the amount of expenditure required if people are obliged to buy wood. These along with other examples and guidelines are found in the handbook.

Les actes présentent d’une façon détaillée toute la richesse des délibérations du Congrès, notamment en séance plénière, dans les symposiums et les ateliers, ainsi que les principaux documents émanant de leurs travaux.

Agriculture in the lower Mekong basin : experience from the critical decade of 1966-1976

The decade from 1966 to 1976 was a tumultuous time in the history of the Lower Mekong Basin, with three of the four countries at war. Remarkably, this was also a time of major planning for developing the agricultural production systems of the region. This publication describes the pioneering work done in that decade under the auspices of the Committee for the Coordination of Investigations in the Lower Mekong Basin, otherwise known as the Mekong Committee. Based on a draft publication prepared in 1977, this book will provide an essential historical dimension to current agricultural development activities. A concluding chapter, briefly summarising what has happened in the thirty years since the initial research was done, will complete the picture.

The flora of the Mediterranean islands includes many rare and localised species unique to the islands. Some of these are particularly threatened with extinction due to various pressures caused by people and their activities in Mediterranean ecosystems. It includes 50 descriptive sheets of species which are especially threatened, based on the IUCN Red List criteria. Each sheet gives a description of the species with illustrations and maps, emphasizing the threats to the species, existing conservation measures and additional measures needed for their conservation. Aimed at the layman, the text is easily accessible to the non-botanist.
