Guide de gestion des réserves de biosphère de l'UNESCO en Afrique

UNESCO biosphere reserves are regions that resemble protected areas, but go far beyond mere protection. Their target is to balance nature conservation with socio-economic development and poverty alleviation. This manual gives guidance to managers, their key partners and stakeholders on this central issue of UNESCO biosphere reserves: why and how to work with local communities. This manual focuses on practical aspects such as how to address and manage local conflicts between stakeholders as well as on co-management with local communities and benefit-sharing. In addition, it aims at promoting up-to-date terminology and methodology of the diverse biosphere reserves on the African continent and to support their networking. This manual also explains the uniqueness of biosphere reserves as being designated by UNESCO according to binding global criteria.

Fishers' knowledge and the ecosystem approach to fisheries
   

This technical paper comprises a series of reviews and case studies from Latin American countries regarding fishers’ knowledge (FK) and its application to fisheries management under the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF). These papers were compiled by an interdisciplinary group of experts to convey the types of knowledge that fishers possess, the context in which that knowledge is created and used, where and how FK can contribute to data requirements within the EAF, and potential methods and institutional approaches to integrate FK into fisheries science and management. This publication responds to the pressing need for theoretical frameworks, practical examples and guidance on what FK encompasses and how this knowledge and experience can be integrated into management of fisheries resources under the EAF. The papers highlight underlying principles for working with FK, good practices and lessons learned in knowledge exchange with fishers, and the role of government and legal frameworks in the context of both marine and inland fisheries.
Mining, the aluminium industry, and indigenous peoples
   

The report provides a global overview of the challenges facing indigenous peoples, and presents five case studies from Australia, Cambodia, Guinea, India and Suriname. The case studies reveal that indigenous communities are affected by primary production activities, such as mining and associated infrastructure (Australia, India, Guinea, Suriname), and by secondary processes such as smelting and energy production used to sustain operations (India, Suriname). The publication is intended to inform the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s new voluntary industry standard, which includes requiring certified companies to adhere to key principles concerning the rights of indigenous peoples, including obtaining Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC).

Enhancing food security through forest landscape restoration
   

The case studies from Brazil, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, the Philippines and Viet Nam highlight how forest landscape restoration (FLR) interventions enhance food security. They illustrate the ‘win-win’ solutions that can enhance land functionality and productivity, develop resilient food systems and explore the long-term potential outputs and enabling conditions for FLR interventions. A greater emphasis on the impacts of degradation and deforestation and other indicators are exemplified throughout these case studies in order to better understand the results from FLR interventions and their relationship to land productivity.

La présente analyse de situation a été réalisée pour éclairer les réponses à plusieurs résolutions formulées lors du 5 Congrès mondial de la nature en 2012, concernant l'état critique des grands vertébrés d'Afrique centrale et de l'Ouest. Elle s'appuie sur un large éventail d'informations pour fournir des renseignements sur le statut de ces espèces, les sites importants, les pressions, la législation, l'efficacité des aires protégées, les mesures d'incitation communautaires en faveur de la conservation et les réponses institutionnelles. En conclusion, force est de constater que les espèces sauvages enregistrent un déclin spectaculaire et que les réponses sont inadaptées pour faire face tant aux pressions de longue date qu'aux nouvelles menaces apparues au course des dernières années et qui s'intensifient rapidement.

Mediterranean quarry rehabilitation manual
   

Building on the experience of Holcim Lebanon in rehabilitating one of its degraded quarries after excavation activities, this report will provide guidelines for rehabilitation practices in Lebanon and the Mediterranean. It will suggest milestones towards a successful rehabilitation process and discuss the challenges and constraints facing restoration initiatives while highlighting the main elements and lessons learned for future rehabilitation attempts in limestone quarries.
