Rehabilitation and translocation programmes are increasingly becoming an important component of conservation action plans for threatened species. Translocation can help address gibbon conservation issues (gibbons are recognized as one of the most threatened primate families globally) by allowing gibbons held in captivity to be rescued, rehabilitated and then returned to the wild. These guidelines for the translocation of gibbons have been developed in collaboration with stakeholders in hylobatarget_id conservation. This process was initiated druing a workshop on gibbon rehabilitation, reintroduction and translocation, facilitated by the IUCN SSC PSG Section on Small Apes (SSA), and the result of this process is the current document, which is based on shared knowledge and experience to date. The guidelines are designed to be a practical and useful document available for all stakeholders, with the aim of equipping field projects and decision makers with the tools for scientifically sound practice in gibbon rehabilitation and translocation.

   

Natural World Heritage sites are internationally recognized as having the highest global conservation significance and include iconic places such as the Serengeti, Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos Islands. These renowned sites offer crucial insight into the successes and challenges on the frontlines of conservation, but only about half of the natural sites have been regularly monitored through the main monitoring mechanisms of the World Heritage Convention. The IUCN World Heritage Outlook monitoring system, which consists of Conservation Outlook Assessments, complements the Conventions monitoring mechanisms and assesses all World Heritage sites in recognition of their natural "Outstanding Universal Value." This report describes the methodology for the IUCN World Heritage Outlook, reviews the rating system applied and then summarizes the first set of global results. We hope the IUCN World Heritage Outlook will serve as a dynamic new tool to assist in celebrating best practice in World Heritage sites and in helping to address the management challenges in some of the most iconic places on Earth.

Following the first international workshop on the economics of ocean acidification organized by the Centre Scientifique de Monaco and the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2010,  a second international workshop was held in November 2012, which explored the level of risk, and the resilience or vulnerability of defined regions of the world ocean in terms of fishery and aquaculture species and economic impacts, and social adaptation. This report includes the findings and recommendations of the respective regional working groups and is the result of an interdisciplinary survey of ocean acidification-sensitive fisheries and aquaculture.

Approximately one-third of all terrestrial high-biodiversity sites straddle national land borders, yet few man-made boundaries are fixed, and international boundaries often alter over time or disappear altogether. This publication makes the compelling case for transboundary conservation approaches and promotes an array of innovative methods based on contemporary principles. It has been developed primarily to provide transboundary conservation managers with advice on how to work more effectively and how to address the challenges that are specific to transboundary conservation.

How can we guarantee a right to life or a right to health without also guaranteeing a decent environment in which to exercise these rights? It is becoming increasingly obvious that a high quality environment is key to the fundamental human rights of life and health, and associated rights such as the right to clean water, adequate housing, and food. This book canvasses a range of law and policy issues concerning human rights and the environment. Each chapter examines an aspect of the links between environmental law and human rights in substantive and/or procedural terms, loosely falling into four themes: human rights and the environment in the context of the private sector; analysis of decisions of the European and Inter-American courts in respect of substantive and procedural aspects; human rights and the environment in the Asian region, including the issue of human displacement; and the future direction of human rights and environment law.

L'adaptation basée sur les ecosystèmes (AbE) intègre la biodiversité et les services écosystémiques dans un stratégie d'adaptation au changement climatique. La communauté de la conservation et du développement durable considère l'AbE comme une solide méthode de lutte contre le changement climatique et les défis qui y sont associés. Cependant, les décideurs politiques ont encore tendance à mettre en oeuvre des solutions d'adaptation basées sur l'ingénierie traditionelles plutôt que d'investir dans l'AbE. Le besoin de données solides sur la rentabilité de cette approche basée sur la nature a constitué la principale motivation pour l'UICN à initier cette étude identifiant les coûts et bénéfices économiques associés à l'AbE. Cette étude a examiné des projets et a évalué des données provenant du Costa Rica, du Mexique, du Pérou, des Philippines et de la Tanzania. Les résultats montrent qu'il existe encore d'importantes lacunes dans les connaissances, et que de plus amples analyses coûts-bénéfices et données de terrain sont requises pour mettre plus clairement en valeur les solutions fondées sur la nature que l'AbE peut offrir pour lutter contre le changement climatique.

Ecosystem-based adaptation (Eba) uses biodiversity and ecosystem services as part of a larger adaptation strategy to climate change. While the conservation and sustainable development community considers EbA to be a strong method of addressing climate change and its associated challenges, there is still a tendency for policy makers to implement traditional engineering solutions for adapation, rather than investing in EbA. The need for solid data on the cost-effectiveness of this nature-based approach was the driver behind an IUCN study identifying the economic costs and benefits associated with EbA. The study reviewed projects and assessed existing data from Costa Rica, India, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines and Tanzania. The results show that there are still extensive knowledge gaps, and that further cost-benefit analysis work and field evidence is required to showcase more clearly the nature-based solutions that EbA offers to climate change.

Leading companies in the primary natural resource sectors are setting more targeted and measureable enviornmental goals, which in regards to biodiversity-related risks, are increasingly framed as "No Net Loss" (NNL) or "Net Positive Impact" (NPI) goals. To date however, much of the experience in implementing approaches with explicit NPI goals for biodiversity has been in the extractives and infrastructure sectors. The objectives of this report are to learn from the NNL/NPI experience of these sectors and explore the potential for applying these approaches in the agriculture and forestry sectors. 

   

Protected areas are inspirational and transformative destinations for millions of people worldwide every year; effectively managed protected areas also help conserve biodiversity and wild nature, sustain ecosystem services, aned provide natural solutions to climate change. Thus, the governance and management of protected areas need to be effective, as the people with protected area management responsibilities have a stewardship responsibility in caring for lands and seas on behalf of future generations, as well as a guardian role. The very purpose of this compendium textbook is to provide highly accessible and relevant information to underpin such competent, effective and professional management decisions for protected areas. 

   

The synthesis report informs future European environmental policy in general and its implementation between 2015 and 2020 in particular. It includes a reflection on the European environment in a global context, as well as chapters summarising the state of, trends in, and prospects for the environment in Europe.

In 2014, IUCN carried out a vulnerability assessment of the impacts of climate change on the Ramsar site at Beung Kiat Ngong in southern Lao PDR. The overall description of the wetland ecosystem and its components were drawn from the Ramsar profiles of the wetland and the recent biodiversity surveys. The statistics related to the local communities and their perceptions about climate change were drawn from consultations with the communities in each of the eight core villages located around the wetland which are dependent upon its natural resources. The vulnerability assessments, which generally followed the CAM methodology developed by ICEM in the earlier studies, focused on the wetland habitats and ecosystem components that were directly used by the local communities.

   

Le renforcement des compétences en « Gestion des aires protégées » demeure une priorité pour l’aménagement et la conservation des parcs et réserves en Afrique de l’ouest et centrale. Depuis 2008, plus de 150 acteurs (État, ONG, privé) et jeunes diplômés de plus de 15 pays ont suivi avec succès l’une des deux formations proposées par l’UICN en collaboration avec l’Université Senghor (Diplôme d’Université et Master). L’évaluation de l’utilisation des acquis et de leur mise en œuvre montre des résultats très encourageants et souligne la pertinence et l’utilité de ces formations.

   

Building capacities in protected area management is a priority for the development and conservation of parks and reserves in West Africa, since a wide range of knowledge and skills is required to manage protected areas, and since the training provided by most water and forestry departments does not include specific modules on protected areas. It is with this in mind that IUCN offers short- and long-term courses aimed at providing the various stakeholders in the field with the tools and technical and scientific skills required to improve the way they manage their parks. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the effects of the training, analyse perceptions of past students, and recommend measures for improving the courses.

Across the globe, women are heavily involved in the environmental sector, including in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, and in adapting to and mitigating climate change. However, women's participation and representation in decision-making processes that pertain to their and their families' environmental well-being are often restricted. In 2014, Conservation International collaborated with IUCN's Global Gender Office (GGO) to produce case studies about the state of women in environmental decision making in three countries: Ecuador, Liberia, and the Philippines. The case studies examine how each country ranks on various gender equality indices, including the EGI; how well women are represented in international delegations; and how many top positions women hold in environmental nongovernmental organizations and environmental government ministries. The case studies are to serve as a tool for expanding and deepening EGI data and analysis.

The potential for numerous amphibian species to go extinct in Oaxaca and Chiapas is high and worthy of being considered a major environmental problem. This report summarizes the findings of a project aimed at gathering information at 16 sites in southern Mexico which had been identified in 2005 as being essential to the continued existence of 22 highly threatened amphibian species, the hope being that it could help initiate conservation action. Site and species information are presented as a series of profiles.

La chasse de viande de brousse représente l’une des grandes menaces pour les écosystèmes forestiers mondiaux. Outre l’utilisation d’approches descendantes (telles que l’application des lois nationales sur la chasse), les projets visant à promouvoir de nouveaux moyens de subsistance ont été mis en œuvre à l’échelle communautaire dans le but de réduire la chasse à travers la fourniture de protéines et de revenus de remplacement de ceux fournis par la viande de brousse. Toutefois, les preuves de l’impact de ces projets sur les pratiques de chasse et les populations d’espèces n’ont pas encore été rassemblées et examinées. La présente étude entreprend la première démarche visant à combler ce vide avec un accent sur les projets visant à promouvoir de nouveaux moyens de subsistance en Afrique centrale.

Bushmeat hunting represents one of the biggest threats to tropical forest ecosystems. In addition to the use of top-down approaches (such as the enforcement of national hunting laws), alternative livelihood projects have been implemented at the community level with the aim of reducing hunting through the provision of protein and income substitutes to wild meat. However, evidence of the impact of these projects on hunting practices and species populations has yet to be collated and reviewed. This study takes the first step towards filling this gap with a focus on alternative livelihood projects in Central Africa.

Globally, disasters due to natural hazards takes an enormous toll in terms of human lives, destruction to crops and livelihoods, and economic losses. Disaster risk reduction (DRR) has therefore become a critical part of sustainable development strategies. Over the past decades, the role of healthy ecosystems in providing cheap, reliable protection against natural hazards has been increasingly recognized. However, DRR strategies based on ecosystem services are failing in many places because natural ecosystems are being degraded and destroyed. As a result, protected areas are being increasingly recognized as potential tools for their role in facilitating DRR. The following handbook provides practical guidance on the effective use of protected areas as tools to reduce the likelihood and impacts of disasters, drawing on case studies. It is aimed at DRR specialists and protected area system administrators and managers.
