Engineering for sustainable human development

In this book, Bernard Amadei addresses the role of engineering in poverty reduction and human development. He introduces a framework to help engineers conduct small-scale projects in communities vulnerable to the consequences of a wide range of adverse events. His framework combines concepts and tools traditionally used by development agencies with techniques from engineering project management and systems thinking. When blended, these tools and techniques from seemingly unrelated fields offer engineers better methods to manage the difficulties inherent in community development projects.

Otro objetivo del manual es ayudar a los Estados Partes a garantizar que el patrimonio desempeñe una función dinámica en la sociedad y a aprovechar los beneficios mutuos que puedan obtenerse de esa función, pero que también los proporcione a otros. El presente manual trata exclusivamente de la gestión de los sitios del patrimonio cultural. Los bienes naturales comparten muchas cuestiones similares, pero también tienen problemas distintos.

Ce manuel ne traite que de la gestion des sites du patrimoine culturel. Les biens naturels soulèvent de nombreuses questions similaires, mais font également face à des problèmes différents.

This booklet provides an overview of the approaches and lessons learnt as a result of the implementation of the pilot phase of the ‘Water for Livestock Project’ in the arid and semi-arid lands of Kenya by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Kenya Red Cross Society, and Adeso. It underscores the need for important planning and management around water resource provision in drylands, and how the approaches adopted under this project could be improved on and implemented in future phases of this project and by other practitioners and development agencies operating in drylands in general.
World heritage and rights-based approaches (Arabic version)
   

Human rights issues have been an integral dimension of UNESCO's mission and work since its establishment. While rights issues are not explicitly mentioned in the 1972 World Heritage Convention, its Strategic Objective "To enhance the role of communities in the implementation of the World Heritage Convention" underscores the need to respect and support communities to be involved in World Heritage processes. Where rights issues are not addressed, a range of problems and conflicts can arise. ICOMOS, IUCN and ICCROM, as Advisory Bodies to the Convention, in consultation with the World Heritage Centre, are collaborating to increase understanding and identify effective approaches to clarifying the rights dimension in World Heritage work. The goal is to promote the application of "good practice" approaches to rights and their enabling conditions in relation to World Heritage, and to develop and recommend possible tools that would assist our work in the nomination and state of conservation processes, as well as the overall work of the Advisory Bodies, to ensure rights issues are appropriately considered.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a range of information which may be useful during dialogue to establish appropriate river flow regimes in the Sekong River in Viet Nam, Lao PDR and Cambodia when large hydropower projects are constructed and operated. It is designed to provide baseline or background information to assist in the process. The first part of the sourcebook starts by putting the Sekong River into context as one of the most significant large tributaries of the Mekong, with some information on the basic hydrology of the Sekong provided. The second part is based upon a description of the Sekong using analysis of its features as observed through Google Earth, to help distinguish and classify the different reaches of the river and their geomorphological and ecological features so that the effects of changing flow regimes can be assessed. Other chapters include information on fish biodiversity and basic information on the human populations and settlements along the river. The final chapters consider the existing and proposed hydropower projects and status of irrigation projects.
