Socio-economic dimensions of human dependence on nature

This paper consists of a review of socio-economic conceptual frameworks, tools and methodologies relevant to HDN, and looks at the different (socio-economic) conceptual frameworks and techniques that could be used to address the key issues of the framework. Case studies are used throughout the paper to illustrate how particular conceptual frameworks and tools have been used to explain socio-economic dimensions of human dependence on nature.

The objective of this background paper is to report on qualitative social sciences frameworks, and mixed methodologies, that could be incorporated into the HDNF assessment tool. Under this primary objective, this report investigates qualitative methodologies aimed at understanding peoples’ own expressions of the value of ecological goods and services derived from nature, including people’s dependency on these goods and services for their livelihood and wellbeing.

This study analyzes available climatic and hydrologic data to carry out a physicalassessment of the basin. This handbook presents the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM), which provides a flexible and affordable framework for countries to rapidly identify and analyse FLR potential and locate special areas of opportunity at a national or sub-national level. The handbook offers practical advice and options to bear in mind when considering or conducting an FLR assessment using ROAM, as well as real-life examples of the kinds of outputs you can expect, and will enable you to commission or design a tailor-made process to meet your specific needs. This "road-test" edition of the handbook is being circulated to engage others in the process of learning about -- and improving -- the methodology. A revised version of the handbook will be published at a later date in order to integrate learning from the road-testing process.

The Sekong River in Viet Nam, Lao PDR and Cambodia

The purpose of this paper is to provide a range of information which may be useful during dialogue to establish appropriate river flow regimes in the Sekong River in Viet Nam, Lao PDR and Cambodia when large hydropower projects are constructed and operated. It is designed to provide baseline or background information to assist in the process. The first part of the sourcebook starts by putting the Sekong River into context as one of the most significant large tributaries of the Mekong, with some information on the basic hydrology of the Sekong provided. The second part is based upon a description of the Sekong using analysis of its features as observed through Google Earth, to help distinguish and classify the different reaches of the river and their geomorphological and ecological features so that the effects of changing flow regimes can be assessed. Other chapters include information on fish biodiversity and basic information on the human populations and settlements along the river. The final chapters consider the existing and proposed hydropower projects and status of irrigation projects.

This publication is an output of joint research conducted on the importance of migratory and spawning patterns for the conservation of the hilsa. The objective of the research was to study migration and spawning patterns, methods of fishing, status of, and threats to, hilsa in the region with a view to enhanced conservation. It also revewed and assessed how current legislation and policy is affecting the species.

Engaging Local Communities in Stewardship of World Heritage draws on over a decade of experience of the Community Management of Protected Areas for Conservation (COMPACT) initiative at eight natural World Heritage Sites in countries of Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia, and on emerging experience at two new sites.

Este XI Informe sobre Derechos Humanos de la Federación Iberoamericana de Ombudsman relativo al medio ambiente cumple nuevamente con la finalidad de la Federación de «fomentar, ampliar y fortalecer la cultura de los Derechos Humanos en los países cuyos Ombudsman formen parte de la FIO», tal y como reza nuestro Estatuto. La Federación sigue apostando por la conveniencia de contar con el apoyo de centros especializados en el estudio y la investigación, habiendo elegido, por undécima ocasión, a la Universidad de Alcalá para ello. Conjuntamente realizamos una aproximación sistemática al tema escogido, conforme a un objeto y método común, aprovechando la oportunidad del trabajo colectivo para cubrir una laguna evidente: la falta de estudios de ámbito netamente iberoamericano sobre Derechos Humanos. También se creyó necesario dar todavía un paso más y construir una auténtica comparación que sintetizara los elementos comunes a los ordenamientos nacionales y la actuación de las Defensorías. Sin duda, todas estas tareas (recopilación de datos, exposición sistemática de los mismos, análisis y síntesis) son científicas y de ahí la colaboración de la Universidad, personalizada en el Director del Informe, quien diseñó su estructura y plan de trabajo, y coordinó todas las contribuciones. 
Plan d'action régional pour la conservation des gorilles de plaine de l'Ouest et des chimpanzés d'Afrique centrale 2015-2025
   

Ce plan d'action définit une stratégie de conservation des gorilles et des  chimpanzés en Afrique équatoriale occidentale. Le gorille de plaine de l'Ouest Gorilla gorilla gorilla et le chimpanzé d'Afrique centrale Pan troglodytes troglodytes connaissent un déclin spectaculaire à cause du braconnage, des maladies et de la disparition de l'habitat dus à la demande de viande de brousse, une application insuffisante des lois, la corruption et une bien plus grande facilité d'accès à des habitats autrefois isolés. Ce document est le produit d'un deuxième atelier régional sur la planification de la conservation des deux sous-espèces de grands singes.
