This book provides an original account of the environmental history of the Great Barrier Reef, based on extensive archival and oral history research. It documents and explains the main human impacts on the Great Barrier Reef since European settlement in the region, focusing particularly on the century from 1860 to 1960 which has not previously been fully documented, yet which was a period of unprecedented exploitation of the ecosystem and its resources. The book describes the main changes in coral reefs, islands and marine wildlife that resulted from those impacts. The author provides a compelling narrative of how one of the world's most iconic and vulnerable ecosystems has been exploited and degraded, but also how some early conservation practices emerged.

These guidelines are designed to be applicable to the full spectrum of conservation translocations. They are based on principle rather than example and are designed to provide guidance on the justification, design and implementation of any conservation translocation.

This publication provides for the first time factual information on the status of medicinal plants in Europe. This assessment includes 400 vascular plants from ninety families, and the good news is it shows that only 2.4% of medicinal plants are threatened. The collection of plants from the wild was identified as the prime threat, and impacts from agriculture were identified as another important threat.

Globally rainforests are under threat on numerous fronts, yet they have a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and providing other ecosystem services. Rainforests are also attractive tourist spaces and where they have been used as a tourism resource they have generated significant income for local communities. However, not all use of rainforests as a tourism resource has been sustainable. This book argues that sustainability must be the foundation on which tourism use of this complex but ultimately fragile ecosystem is built upon. It provides a multi-disciplinary perspective, incorporating rainforest science, management and tourism issues.

Many environmental and social benefits will result from implementing activities to tackle emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and to promote the conservation of forest carbon stocks, as well as from the sustainable management of forests and carbon enhancements in developing countries (REDD+). Benefit sharing in REDD+ refers to the ways in which the financial benefits resulting from these activities will be distributed among different local stakeholders within a country. It is necessary to create ad hoc institutional frameworks and design equitable and transparent benefit sharing schemes such that the rewards may be distributed among all the many stakeholders within the country who have in some way participated in the achievements. This report presents a summary of the gaps and problems in the design of benefit sharing schemes, focusing particularly on the need to develop pro-poor schemes, and includes the Forest Dialogues' main recommendations and suggestions. An assessment of both the challenges and the potential paths for implementation is included in the example provided by the case of implementation of REDD+ in Mexico.

The objective of this report is to discuss and present opportunities for scaling up pilot projects that will support the government of Rwanda to achieve "border to border" forest and landscape restoration that contributes to multiple sustainable development objectives.

The Shock Doctrine explains why the climate crisis challenges us to abandon the core “free market” ideology of our time, restructure the global economy, and remake our political systems. The author demonstrates precisely why the market has not—and cannot—fix the climate crisis but will instead make things worse, with ever more extreme and ecologically damaging extraction methods, accompanied by rampant disaster capitalism. Klein argues that the changes to our relationship with nature and one another that are required to respond to the climate crisis humanely should not be viewed as grim penance, but rather as a kind of gift—a catalyst to transform broken economic and cultural priorities and to heal long-festering historical wounds. And she documents the inspiring movements that have already begun this process.

In this innovative volume, the author addresses some important challenges related to the effective and equitable governance of marine protected areas (MPAs). These challenges are explored through a study of 20 MPA case studies from around the world.  A key theme is that MPA governance needs to combine people, state and market approaches, rather than being based on one approach and its related ideals. Building on a critique of the governance analysis framework developed for common-pool resources, the author puts forward a more holistic and less prescriptive framework for deconstructing and analyzing the governance of MPAs. This inter-disciplinary analysis is aimed at supporting the development of MPA governance approaches that build social-ecological resilience through both institutional and biological diversity. It will also make a significant contribution to wider debates on natural resource governance.

While Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have bountiful supplies of renewable resources and an island culture that is iconic of paradise, the challenges ahead are daunting. While the future cannot be predicted, the development of plausible futures built on combinations of realistic outlooks can offer a basis for policy choices. This report shows that there is much that SIDS can do proactively to anticipate environmental problems and their economic consequences or even avoid them through innovative planning and action. The UNEP GEO SIDS Outlook provides an ensemble of four island-centric futures: the blue-green economy; technology leapfrogging; priority to island community and culture; and reconnecting with nature. Elements of each can be combined to respond to the needs of a particular island or state. The report includes options for a SIDS sustainability policy framework, to help individual states consider future policies that best respond to their needs. Finally, a preliminary review of national submissions to the conference shows how much progress is already being made.

This book explores the global conservation and management of sharks. There has been a rapid decline in populations of many shark species, while new science has emerged of the critical role they play in marine ecosystems. However, conservation law and policy have been slow to develop, with only a handful of iconic species being protected worldwide. This book surveys our current knowledge and status of the law and science in relation to sharks, with a particular focus on improving frameworks for their conservation and management.

Forests cover vast regions of the globe and serve as a first line of defense against the worst effects of climate change, but only if we keep them healthy and resilient. The authors present an overview of forests around the globe, describing basic precepts of forest ecology and physiology and how forests will change as earth's climate warms. Drawing on years of research and teaching, they discuss the values and uses of both natural and plantation-based forests. In easy-to-understand terms, they describe the ecosystem services forests provide, present economic concepts important to the management and policy decisions that affect forests, and introduce the use of growth-and-yield models and remote-sensing technology that provide the data behind those decisions. This book is a useful guide for undergraduates as well as managers, administrators, and policy makers in environmental organizations and government agencies looking for a clear overview of basic forest processes and pragmatic suggestions for protecting the health of forests.

The IUCN-SSC Crocodile Specialist Group conducted a review mission to Ethiopia from 26 April – 08 May 2014 to examine Ethiopia’s Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) conservation and management program and the status, and likely sustainability, of ranching and trophy hunting initiatives. The review involved considerable input about operations, and the legal and policy frameworks supporting those operations, from the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA), the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Regional State (SNNPRS), and the Arba Minch Crocodile Ranch (AMCR). We visited the AMCR and conducted three day and night crocodile surveys of the Lake Chamo crocodile population. The Ethiopian authorities requested the CSG to make recommendations as appropriate, which we present herein.

Developed through a literature review and individual consultations with experts and validated through an experts' workshop, this white paper considers the  most recent work on the intersection of gender and energy. It intends to demonstrate that gender equality can be a driver for more effective clean energy investments, and that this gender lens can be applied at every level of the energy value chain. The findings identify and address knowledge gaps, raise awareness, and provide recommendations for actions and further research to implement gender-responsive clean energy and climate change mitigation initiatives.

The action plan lays out a conservation strategy for gorillas and chimpanzees in Western Equatorial Africa. The Endangered central chimpanzee Pan troglodytes troglodytes and the Critically Endangered western lowland gorilla Gorilla gorilla gorilla are undergoing a dramatic decline due to poaching, disease and habitat loss, driven by demands for bushmeat, a lack of law enforcement, by corruption, and by increased access to their once-remote habitat -- like the recent expansion of industrial agriculture. This document is the product of the second regional workshop on conservation planning for the two subspecies of great ape, which brought together senior representatives of the wildlife authorities in the six range states, protected area managers, NGOs, scientists, wildlife health experts, industry representatives and donors. These stakeholders assessed great ape conservation needs for the next 10 years, building on an action plan published in 2005, to develop a new plan of action that will serve as a guide for range-state governments, donors and conservation organisations to target conservation investment in the region.
