An ecosystem approach to management of seamounts in the Southern Indian Ocean : volume 3 : legal and institutional gap analysis

This publication presents a legal and institutional gap analysis of the project area, covering five seamount regions, two of which are inside proposed Benthic Protected Areas (BPAs), Atlantis Bank and Coral Seamount, and three outside BPAs. It proposes improvements to the legal and institutional framework. This type of analysis identifies global and regional legal instruments and institutional arrangements which apply to the project area and assesses any legal and governance gaps related to the conservation of biodiversity in the project area.

The individual and cumulative threats to and effects of the full range of human activities on marine ecosystems and biodiversity in general, and seamounts in particular, in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) are still largely unknown. These threats and their effects must be taken into account in order to be able to develop a robust, holistic ecosystem-based management scheme. This paper compiles and examines existing and potential future threats to seamount ecosystems and biodiversity located in ABNJ of the Indian Ocean. It is also intended to serve as a template for anthropogenic threat analyses of other seamount ecosystems elsewhere.

Seamounts are topographic rises of the seabed with a limited extent across the summit. There is evidence that seamounts form hotspots of biological activity in the oceans. Why seamounts host abundant populations of fish and other pelagic and aquatic predators is still uncertain. This publication examines seamounts in general and specifically those in the Southern Indian Ocean, focusing on the biodiversity of these ecosystems and management of deep-sea fisheries on seamounts and surrounding high seas.

Cette publication présente l'information sur l'état de conservation des mammifères marins et des tortues marines qui habitent la Méditerranée et la mer Noire. Chaque espèce a été classée préalablement par l'UICN à l'échelle globale et nous présentons ici les premiers résultats de l'évaluation régionale des cétacés résidents de la mer Méditerranée. Nous abordons également les menaces principales qui affectent leur survie et leur croissance, en incluant aussi des recommandations pour une meilleure protection de ces espèces. Vous y trouverez finalement quelques détails concernant les espèces résidentes (celles observées tout au long de l'année et qui se reproduisent dans la région), les espèces de passage (plus rares mais sont observées régulièrement chaque année) et les espèces erratiques (rares et inattendues qui n'apparaissant pas chaque année). Ce document résume aussi l'état global actuel des cétacés de passage et erratiques de la Méditerranée, l'état des cétacés endémiques de la mer Noire, l'état de conservation de la seule espèce méditerranéenne de phoque, et l'information disponible la plus récente concernant les tortues marines.

Cada especie ha sido clasificada previamente por la UICN a escala global y presentamos aquí los primeros resultados de la evaluación regional de las especies de cetáceos residentes en el mar Mediterráneo. También se centra en las principales amenazas que afectan a su supervivencia y crecimiento, y hace recomendaciones para preservarlas mejor. Ofrece breves detalles de las especies residentes (aquellas registradas a lo largo de todo el año y que crían en la región) y especies errantes (raras e inesperadas que no aparecen anualmente). Esta publicación también resume el actual estado global de los cetáceos visitantes y errantes del Mediterráneo, el estado de las especies endémicas de cetáceos del mar Negro, el estado de conservación de la única especie de foca del Mediterráneo , y la última información disponible sobre tortugas marinas.

The main goal of this Explanatory Guide is to facilitate the understanding of the legal obligations of the Parties under the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity. This guide is the product of a fruitful, constructive, and harmonious collaboration with ABS experts from different regions and international institutions who engaged with IUCN in the writing and reviewing of this Guide. This publication serves as an adaptable tool for future ABS capacity-building and awareness raising initiatives, as well as an important reference for countries in their efforts to implement the Nagoya Protocol and operationalize ABS in practice.
CEC annual report 2011 : a global network for change
   

This report presents highlights of CEC activities in 2011. The Commission engaged in initiatives supporting the IUCN One Programme, with an emphasis on building skills and raising awareness. CEC pursued partnership activities with IUCN members, the Secretariat, other Commissions and key external partners. CEC members contributed to the IUCN Regional Conservation Fora and facilitated workshops to improve communication, education and public awareness in the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans across all regions. Young professionals in CEC took a leadership role in strengthening the emerging youth presence in IUCN. Our CEC Focal Point also engaged young people at the World Scout Jamboree, where CEC coordinated 1,000 person-hours of IUCN environmental education.
