Regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) play a critical role in global fisheries governance. A performance assessment of governance of bycatch, including discards, by 13 RFMOs, regional bodies with the competence to establish conservation and management measures for marine capture fisheries, was conducted. Findings enabled the identification of priority gaps and provide the first comprehensive baseline against which to track future progress in filling identified bycatch governance deficits.

This publication is dedicated to the topic of natural World Heritage. It explores how these outstanding sites can function as the flagships of protected areas and thereby support biodiversity conservation as well as human well-being. Statements of young people from around the world who participated in the International Youth Forum Go4BioDiv, held in parallel to the CBD-COP 10 in Nagoya, Japan, in October 2010, illustrate the threats to the treasures of our planet.

Protected Landscapes are a strong option for biodiversity conservation in human-influenced landscapes and seascapes. They often contain threatened or endemic species. There is now also a growing interest in the nature conservation benefits of protected landscapes. But do protected landscapes really protect wild biodiversity? The case studies collected here launch an investigation into wild biodiversity. They show that there is good if limited evidence that the approach can deliver effective biodiversity conservation.

This publication presents innovative ways that have been used to influence policy processes, from community pressure groups through elected and unelected leaders, to scientific discourse at the levels of directors of economic planning and conservation. The book analyzes experiences from a variety of conservation interventions by IUCN and other agencies, primarily in Eastern Africa, and challenges the notion of policymaking as a cyclical process. It elaborates on this theme and presents an array of examples of how communities have influenced government, through direct lobbying, influence of parliamentarians, wielding of science and research, and inter-community dialogue, networking and solidarity. The contributors present a framework for understanding and strategizing such work so that other institutions can identify where they can best add value.

This paper describes Livelihoods and Landscapes Strategy interventions in the Wassa Amenfi West Landscape in the western region of Ghana. The landscape extends over an area of about 120,000 ha. It is a mixed landscape with a variety of agricultural uses; the most important is cocoa farming. At the start of the LLS intervention, parts of the landscape, particularly forested areas were quite degraded, while levels of poverty among the communities that rely on natural resource exploitation were quite high. This situation was further complicated by poorly-defined and publicized land tenure arrangements, which provided disincentives for the local population to undertake action to protect and restore trees, especially cocoa bushes.

The Livelihoods and Landscapes Strategy Miyun project has generated important lessons about the process of working to improve landscapes and livelihoods in a watershed context. This paper documents and shares these lessons. In particular, it summarizes how the project was conceptualized and implemented, how and why this changed over time, and what its key impacts and achievements have been.

This paper documents insights and lessons about using markets and incentives to strengthen forest landscapes and livelihoods. It aims to interrogate just what a ‘landscape approach’ means in economic terms, to identify how markets can be used to generate incentives to share forest benefits more equitably and sustainably, and to highlight which kinds of approaches and ‘packages’ of interventions can assist in this.

This booklet presents information on the conservation status of the marine mammals and sea turtles that inhabit the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Each species has previously been classified by IUCN at global level and here we present the first results of the regional assessment for those cetacean species resident in the Mediterranean Sea. It also focuses on the main threats that affect their survival and growth and makes recommendations to better preserve them. It presents brief details on resident species (those recorded all year round and breeding in the region), visitor species (scarcer but occurring regularly every year) and vagrant species (rare and unexpected ones that do not occur annually). This booklet also summarizes the current global status of visitor and vagrant cetaceans in the Mediterranean and the status of the endemic cetacean species in the Black Sea, the conservation status of the only Mediterranean seal species, and the latest information available on marine turtles.

Wetlands are amongst the Earth's most productive ecosystems. In Bangladesh these are of great importance because of the extensive food webs and rich biodiversity they support. In the past, wetlands have been undervalued. However, in recent times, awareness increases of the fact that natural wetlands provide many services toward mankind through various functions, products e.g., fish, fuelwood, timber, rice, and attributes i.e., biodiversity, aesthetic beauty, cultural heritage and archaeology.

This publication brings together case studies, best practices and lessons learned on capacity development aspects of water and the green economy. Contained herein are mainly constributions from UN agencies working together in the inter-agency mechanism known as UN-Water, which look at the characteristics of a green economy and what it will take to accomplish the transition to one with respect to capacity development needs within the water supply and sanitation sector.

This publication lays out the basic steps required by a catchment or protected area manager to begin the Strategic Adaptive Management (SAM) process. We provide the series of steps to help deal with the complex task facing the freshwater manager. The guide provides a framework for managing the maintenance of flow regimes and water quality to support healthy ecosystem services desired by stakeholders. The approach follows a structured path adapted for any reserve, whatever the configuration, threat or resources available. The lessons contained here should also help managers charged with the management of environmental flows, which are increasingly important for degraded river systems, but also managers of freeflowing rivers whose flow regimes remain largely intact.

Development and implementation of blue carbon-based activities now requires strategic policy and incentive mechanisms to achieve coastal conservation, restoration and sustainable use, and provide disincentives to drain or damage coastal systems. A first effort to develop such a strategic program was set out in the first edition of the Blue Carbon Policy Framework. Based on additional information and current progress a revised Blue Carbon Policy Framework 2.0 has now been developed. It updates the previous version and adds a detailed coordinated program of policy objectives and activities. It outlines the activities needed for the integration of blue carbon into existing policy initiatives and the implementation of coastal management activities. The framework, described in this document, also details a timeline and identifies the possible stakeholders to further develop the activities.
