IUCN knowledge products : the basis for a partnership to support the functions and work programme of IPBES
   

This report describes IUCN knowledge products focusing on those which incorporate the spatial distribution of biodiversity information on the land and in the sea. Such knowledge is used to underpin conservation, restoration, marine and land use planning and natural resource management.
Building and operating biodiversity-friendly hotels in the Caribbean
Siting and design of hotels and resorts : principles and case studies for biodiversity conservation
   

Integrating biodiversity considerations into siting and design decisions for hotel and resort developments is important not only for the continued viability and conservation of the ecosystems, but also for the long-term financial success of the hotels and resorts. To address the risks to biodiversity at the siting and design stages of hotel and resort developments, IUCN has developed five Biodiversity Principles for siting and design which focus on how biodiversity and associated social impacts can be better addressed in the planning and construction stages of the hotel life cycle. They are targeted at all relevant stakeholders, including planning authorities, tourism development agencies, developers, investors, hotel managers and management companies, project managers and consultants, architects and construction firms. Thirteen case studies have been developed to illustrate how these principles can be implemented.

La biodiversidad juega un papel importante en la vida diaria de un hotel. Desde la comida del restaurante a la madera de los muebles y acabados, a las comodidades del spa, los productos de la biodiversidad se encuentran en cada rincón de los hoteles. A fuera, las plantas y los animales hacen que las áreas públicas de un hotel sean atractivas para los clientes, mientras que más allá de las rejas del hotel, los parques nacionales, los espacios verdes, las costas y los hábitats naturales ofrecen a los clientes numerosas oportunidades para la recreación y la diversión. Esta guía está diseñada para ayudar a los propietarios y gerentes de pequeños y grandes hoteles en el Caribe a conservar la naturaleza y a guiar el uso sostenible de los recursos biológicos en sus tareas diarias.
Tacaná watersheds, Guatemala and Mexico : transboundary water governance and implementation of IWRM through local community action

Beginning with a grassroots approach to water management, increased knowledge and information and the improvement of environmental health and livelihoods, the region around the Tacaná volcano on the border of Guatemala and Mexico has shown the way forward in scaling up local level approaches to national level initiatives. WANI and partners set up a demonstration project in the Tacaná Watersheds, which combined pilot livelihoods projects and bottom-up integrated governance of water resources management. This case study describes the situation, activities taken, and results achieved during this process.
Volta River Basin, Ghana and Burkina Faso : transboundary water management through multi-level participatory governance and community projects

In the Volta basin, WANI and partners have worked with riparian states to improve water governance and water management practices. This has resulted in multi-scale participatory governance frameworks for joint management of water resources and improvement of livelihoods through riverbank protection schemes. This has complemented and helped to facilitate large scale government and donor initiatives that have supported the establishment the Volta Basin Authority. The Volta Basin now has a number of legal tools, knowledge and capacity to sustainably manage its shared water resources at local to transboundary levels. This case study describes the situation, activities taken, and results achieved during this process.
Mekong River Basin : mobilising grassroots engagement and facilitating high-level dialogue for transboundary water management

The Water and Nature Initiate’s (WANI) activities in the Mekong followed a strategy of mobilizing grass-roots engagement of local stakeholders in decision making, while facilitating high-level dialogues. This helped to build networked, multi-stakeholder processes which could begin to bridge local to national and regional decision making in the basin to support improved transboundary basin management. This case study describes the situation, activities taken, and results achieved during this process.

No pretende ser exhaustivo, sino más bien centrar la atención en algunas de las cuestiones más importantes abordadas por los Miembros de la UICN en colaboración con las seis Comisiones de la UICN (sobre Especies, Áreas Protegidas, Derecho Ambiental, Gestión de Ecosistemas, Comunicaciones y Educación, y Política Ambiental, Económica y Social) con el apoyo de la Secretaría de la UICN. Examinará más a profundidad las resoluciones emitarget_idas por el último Congreso Mundial de la Naturaleza, celebrado en Barcelona, España, del 5 al 14 de octubre de 2008.

Le présent document souligne brièvement certains des effets et influences majeurs de ces résolutions sur la conservation de la nature. Son ambition n’est pas d’être exhaustif mais plutôt de mettre en lumière certaines des questions les plus importantes traitées par les Membres de l’UICN, en collaboration avec les six Commissions de l’UICN (espèces, aires protégées, droit de l’environnement, gestion des écosystèmes, communication et éducation, et politiques environnementales, économiques et sociales) et avec le soutien du Secrétariat de l’UICN. Il s’attardera sur les résolutions adoptées par le Congrès mondial de la nature le plus récent qui a eu lieu à Barcelone, Espagne, du 5 au 14 octobre 2008.
A review of the impact of IUCN resolutions on international conservation efforts
   

This paper briefly highlights some of the major impacts and influences that these resolutions have had on conservation. It is not meant to be comprehensive, but rather to focus attention on some of the most significant issues that the IUCN Membership has addressed, working together with IUCN's six Commissions (on Species, Protected Areas, Environmental Law, Ecosystem Management, Communications and Education, and Environmental, Economic and Social Policy) and supported by IUCN's Secretariat. It will go into more depth on the resolutions issued by the most recent World Conservation Congress, held in Barcelona, Spain, on 5-14 October 2008.

At a crucial time of rapid socio-economic change, nature and World Heritage in the Arab States provides an assessment of World Heritage in the Arab States region. This includes the conservation outlook for the five existing natural and mixed World Heritage sites in the region, as well as an analysis of the regions' potential natural heritage sites included in the Tentative Lists. This report has been produced by IUCN as a contribution to supporting the World Heritage Convention in the Arab States, recognizing the need to strengthen the identification, conservation and presentation of natural heritage in the region. It is intended to help identify future IUCN priorities for work on World Heritage. The report is a pilot project for a future, more extensive report, on the state of conservation of all natural and mixed World Heritage sites.

This document is a summary of the technical report on the current state of affairs in the Mediterranean basin. It describes the specific characteristics of the Mediterranean Sea and the phenemenon of climate change observed on the scale of this particular region. It then presents five species of Magnoliophyta documented in its waters. Secondly, it describes the impact of climate change on Mediterranean seagrasses, firstly with regard to the pressures to which they are subjected and their resilience to them and, secondly, to the communities associated with the marine environments they form. The last part of the document is devoted to the role played by seagrass meadows in the mitigation of the consequences of climate change, in respect of extreme weather events and the fixation and sequestration of blue carbon.

Ce document est un résumé du rapport technique relatif à l’état de la question dans le bassin méditerranéen. Il décrit les spécificités de la mer Méditerranée et le phénomène du changement climatique observé à l’échelle de cette région. Il présente ensuite les caractéristiques des cinq espèces de Magnoliotphytes présentes dans ses eaux. Dans un second temps, il décrit l’impact du changement climatique sur les herbiers Méditerranéens, d’abord en ce qui concerne les pressions qu’il y exerce et leur résilience à ces pressions, et ensuite en ce qui concerne les communautés qui leur sont associées. La dernière partie du document est consacrée au rôle joué par les herbiers dans l’atténuation des conséquences du changement climatique, en prenant en compte les évènements climatiques extrêmes et la fixation ou la séquestration du carbone bleu.

Este documento es un resumen del informe técnico sobre esta temática en la cuenca mediterránea. Describe las especificidades del mar Mediterráneo y el fenómeno del cambio climático observado a escala de esta región. Presenta igualmente las características de las cinco especies de Magnoliofitas presentes en sus aguas. En un segundo tiempo, describe el impacto del cambio climático sobre las praderas mediterráneas, primeramente respecto a las presiones que ejerce sobre ellas y su resiliencia a dichas presiones, y luego respecto a las comunidades que están asociadas con ellas. La ultima parte del documento está dedicado al papel que desempeñan las praderas en la mitigación de las consecuencias del cambio climático, tomando en consideración los episodios climáticos extremos y la fijación o el secuestro del carbono azul.

Se trata del primer documento en español sobre el enfoque de Adaptación basada en Ecosistemas, que UICN promueve a escala mundial. Se fundamenta en una revisión de literatura especializada y dirigida a técnicos y profesionales que trabajan en actividades relacionadas con la adaptación al cambio climático. La publicación expone lo que es la Adaptación basada en Ecosistemas (AbE) y cómo esta funciona en la práctica incluyendo algunos beneficios pontenciales; expone el vínculo entre adaptación y mitigación del cambio climático, así como la articulación entre la AbE y el enfoque ecosistémico. También presenta las lecciones aprendidas en las primeras iniciativas de AbE, traducidas en una serie de principios básicos fundamentales a considerar en el desarrollo de estrategias y proyectos de AbE. Finalmente se detallan las barreras, límites y vacíos en el conocimiento.

In 2005 the Pacific Leaders endorsed the Pacific Islands Framework for Action on Climate Change (PIFACC) 2006 to 2015. The Framework's vision is Pacific island people, their livelihoods and the environment resilient to the risks and impacts of climate change. This second edition maintains the vision and goal of PIFACC but considers advances in understanding of climate change issues, developments in the global and regional climate change architecture, and the experiences of Pacific Island Countries and Territories, Pacific Regional Organizations, donors and other development partners, in implementing climate change programs since endorsement of the original edition of this Framework.
