This publication aims to provide the data, theory, and predictions for the potential long-term outcome of a biodiversity conservation programme at a mining site. The Rio Tinto ilmenite mine in southeastern Madagascar, run by QIT Madagascar Minerals (Rio Tinto QMM), has been chosen as a pilot site to test the tools designed to achieve and quantify net positive impact (NPI) on biodiversity. In the present analysis, biodiversity losses and gains were measured and forecast for the period 2004–2065 (i.e. from the date of the NPI commitment to the anticipated date of mine closure), in order to determine whether the current and proposed mitigation activities of Rio Tinto QMM are sufficient to achieve NPI by closure.

This publication provides guidance for terrestrial, marine, and freshwater protected area managers at both system and site levels on the restoration of natural and associated values of protected areas. As this sometimes necessitates restoration beyond protected area borders (e.g., to address ecosystem fragmentation and maintain well-connected protected area systems), this guide uses the term ‘restoration for protected areas’ for activities within protected areas and for activities in connecting or surrounding lands and waters that influence protected area values. It provides information on principles and best practice, with examples, and advice on the process of restoration, but is not a comprehensive restoration manual and does not give detailed methodologies and techniques.

With the smaller number of marine protected areas (MPAs) compared with terrestrial protected areas, there is less experience and understanding of applying the categories to MPAs. Application of the categories to MPAs has often been inaccurate and inconsistent. These supplementary marine guidelines are thus aimed at ensuring that the IUCN categories can be effectively applied to all types of MPAs as well as to any marine components of adjoining terrestrial protected areas, provided a site meets the IUCN definition of a protected area. Inconsistencies in the application of, and reporting on, the categories reduce the efficacy and use of the system as a global classification scheme. These supplementary guidelines should increase the accuracy and consistency of both assignment and reporting.

This booklet describes some of the plants present in and around Lake Tanganyika that can affect its environment and biodiversity. There are many such plants and there will be more, but this small volume is a starting handbook to invasive plant recognition, understanding and management. It contains a selection of species that can are known to be invasive in other situations and some that have already begun to show that tendency in Lake Tanganyika and/or its catchment. Each species is described (with minimal technical terms) and illustrated so that it can be recognised and distinguished from other plants. Each species has a small section on its likely impacts on the lake and its contents (often derived from experiences in other lakes and wetlands), its means of spreading (which helps us to control it) and some ways of managing it if the species becomes invasive or is seen as likely to do so.

This study, based on a colloquium, field assessments of development activities and technical analyses pertaining to barrier-built estuaries and lagoons, was inspired by the positive response to a preceding report captioned ‘An Appraisal of Mangrove Management in Micro-target_idal Estuaries and Lagoons in Sri Lanka’. The colloquium on mangroves gave IUCN an opportunity to recognize the complexity of outcomes that are associated with planting and/ or restoration of the vegetation in the dynamic setting of micro-target_idal estuaries and lagoons. It also exposed the gap in information and knowledge that would result in the event that the even more complex parents ecosystems in which mangroves exist, the barrier-built estuaries and lagoons, are left inadequately understood. This report based on the findings of a colloquium held in February, 2011 with participation of responsible government agencies, community representatives, scientists and conservation organizations contributes toward building the knowledge base for sustainable management.

This report from the IUCN Shark Specialist Group includes the first compilation of conservation status assessments for the 282 chondrichthyan species (sharks, rays, and chimaeras) recorded from North American, Central American, and Caribbean waters. The status and needs of those species assessed against the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species criteria as threatened (Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable) are highlighted. An overview of regional issues and a discussion of current and future management measures are also presented. A primary aim of the report is to inform the development of chondrichthyan research, conservation, and management priorities for the North American, Central American, and Caribbean region.

This project aims to assess the socioeconomic value of freshwater species across the northern African region within the context of the threats to those species as previously determined and documented by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The aim here is to link IUCN Red List data on the extinction risk for 877 species across northern Africa with information on these freshwater species’ socioeconomic value, and to evaluate levels of dependence on wetland services in conjunction with the known threats faced by the species underpinning these services. The results of this project have enabled us to identify species of high socio-economic importance and the threats to their long-term survival and sustainable use. Actions needed to ensure the future sustainable use of these resources are discussed.

The IUCN Species Survival Commission and IUCN Asia Regional Office commissioned this independent report to assess the state and condition of intertarget_idal habitats along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF), in response to growing concerns expressed by IUCN members over observed declines in biodiversity, the loss of ecological services, and an increase in ecological disasters. This report is a situation analysis, and it seeks to gather in one place the relevant data and analyses, and to present as clear a picture of the status of the intertarget_idal zone in the EAAF as the data allow. By intention, this report makes no recommendations, but it should serve as a resource for those stakeholders empowered to make or influence decisions and policies in the region.

This Resource Manual has a specific purpose: helping to manage natural values within World Heritage properties. As such it is aimed at natural and mixed World Heritage properties as well as cultural landscapes (inscribed under cultural criteria). The intention is to help managers understand and incorporate World Heritage concepts and processes into natural site management. It is hoped that all natural World Heritage managers and staff will find useful guidance here and will be inspired to explore the many resources highlighted. Many of the management principles described will apply to any type of protected area, but here special emphasis is given to those management considerations most relevant to World Heritage status.

The period 2009-2012 has a double meaning for the West and Central Africa Programme (PACO), one of the eight regional offices of IUCN worldwide. Firstly, it is more or less the first steps of PACO, since it was established in mid 2008, from the regional offices for Central Africa (BRAC) and West Africa (BRAO) at the time. Secondly it represents the period of implementation of the four-year programme adopted in 2008 in Barcelona by the IUCN Congress. This outcome is thus, a look at progress made in the construction of PACO. It particularly takes stock of progress made in terms of achieving the set ambitions of the 2009-2012 programme, development of partnership; structuring relations between the Secretariat, IUCN Members and Commissions, and technical outputs.

Although there is a common agreement on the importance of conservation of Mediterranean submarine canyons amongst international organizations, their governance is complex: the canyons' extension covers waters and seabeds under various types of jurisdictions (territorial waters, Fisheries Protection Zone, Ecological Protection Zone, including delimitation issues). Conservation of deep-sea features, such as canyons, requires improving our understanding of the biological and ecological role of these ecosystems, threats and conservation issues, limits and chances of national and international jurisdictions. This report has been written with the intention of meeting this need by reviewing interdisciplinary contributions of experts from various Mediterranean countries.
