This is the sixth African Elephant Status Report (AESR) produced by the African Elephant Specialist Group (AFESG) of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC). Like its predecessors, this report is based on data from the African Elephant Database (AED).

Unite for Nature on the Path to 2045: A 20-Year Strategic Vision for the Union articulates IUCN’s commitment to “a just world that values and conserves nature” and establishes a clear direction for the next two decades. It guides collective efforts to safeguard biodiversity, inspire societal engagement, and drive transformative change toward a sustainable future.

This report organises its findings around six interconnected ENACT systems. In agriculture and food systems, NbS can reverse degradation, reduce emissions and enhance food security. In human settlements, NbS improve public health and foster inclusive, liveable cities. For natural and modified ecosystems, NbS safeguard ecological integrity and carbon sinks while supporting livelihoods.

This baseline assessment represents a scientific decision-supporting source of information that aids the participatory planning process for the RNBWS interventions. It is a vital component of comprehensive implementation through highlighting the context-specific opportunities as well as challenges.

This baseline assessment serves a crucial purpose in providing a comprehensive understanding of the existing conditions in Al Qaa, Ras Baalbeck, and Fekha, particularly regarding water resources, agriculture, and climate change impacts. The overall purpose of this scoping study is to provide a state-of-the art overview of the Albanian national context in regard to the application of NbS approaches for climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster risk reduction (DRR).
