Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are areas contributing significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity. KBAs need to be managed to ensure environmental flows are sufficient to support these fragile freshwater ecosystems. IUCN's Protected Areas Management Categories, which classify protected areas according to their management objectives, are today accepted as the benchmark for defining, recording and classifying protected areas.They are recognized by international bodies such as the United Nations as well as many national governments. As a result, they are increasingly being incorporated into government legislation.
Natural World Heritage sites are internationally recognised as having the highest global nature conservation priority. As of November 2017, there are 241 natural and mixed (both cultural and natural) World Heritage sites, representing about 0.1% of the total number of protected areas globally, but yet with a total coverage of 294 million hectares, accounting for 8% of the combined surface of terrestrial and 6% of marine protected areas.
The aim of this study is to provide an overview of national legal instruments in all European Union Member States related to protection of the marine environment from plastic pollution, and to support upcoming European policy efforts such as the EU Strategy on Plastics, but also other future efforts to tackle this global environmental challenge.

Cette étude, qui est également menée régionalement sur des barrages au Sénégal et au Mali, cherche à comprendre dans quelle mesure et à quelles conditions les périmètres aménagés de Bagré permettent de réduire la pauvreté et l’insécurité alimentaire.
