The objective of this publication is to present lessons learned throughout the process of ‘making the case for ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) ’ to government and other stakeholders, encouraging them to include EbA approaches in broader adaptation strategies, and to bring about the required shifts in policy and finance.

This report has been prepared as part of an effort by IUCN to define its position on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and plan for future work to advance this concept and support effective implementation of NbS to enhance ecosystem services provision and address societal challenges. The report proposes a definitional framework for NbS, including a set of general principles for any NbS intervention.

The Humphead Wrasse Cheilinus undulatus is a naturally rare coral reef fish species. This paper consists of a review of socio-economic conceptual frameworks, tools and methodologies relevant to HDN, and looks at the different (socio-economic) conceptual frameworks and techniques that could be used to address the key issues of the framework. Case studies are used throughout the paper to illustrate how particular conceptual frameworks and tools have been used to explain socio-economic dimensions of human dependence on nature.

The objective of this background paper is to report on qualitative social sciences frameworks, and mixed methodologies, that could be incorporated into the HDNF assessment tool.
