In the wake of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, four organizations, Both ENDS, World Wide Fund for Nature, Wetlands International and IUCN Netherlands Committee, implemented “Green Coast: for nature and people after the tsunami”, to assist the tsunamiaffected countries in Asia: India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia.

The combination of threats currently facing the remaining great apes requires immediate conservation action at all scales – from site-level initiatives, through national and regional strategies, to international conventions and action plans. This document outlines current approaches to great ape surveys and monitoring for field biologists, protected area managers, government wildlife departments and the conservation community at large.

The environmental movement has made huge progress over the last decades. Among others, it has raised awareness of challenges facing humanity, helped develop a critical mass of policies, and worked towards the implementation of many of these policies in collaboration with other stakeholders. Now, however, we are at a turning point in the history of the global environmental movement.

This publication provides an overview of the world’s shared water resources and insights for managing these resources. Using case studies from around the world, it describes the benefits to be gained from cooperation and the challenges of constructing legal frameworks, institutions, management processes and financing and partnership strategies to govern transboundary waters equitably and sustainably.

Este estudio reconstruye, a partir de la historia oral, el proceso de transformación de las costumbres relacionadas con los diferentes usos que se le dan al agua. Para ellos se han entrevistado a personas de la zona, quienes han brindado amablemente datos, recuerdos e historias. De ahí su valor histórico natural.

Los servicios ecosistémicos de las cuencas son claves para generar seguridad a los usuarios del agua, por medio de incentivos económicos de manera innovadora que permitan una gestión correcta de los ecosistemas y recursos hídricos, este es uno de los caminos que fortalecen la seguridad del acceso al agua.

La presente publicación recoge algunos de los estudios de caso y de las discusiones del taller, así como otras iniciativas presentadas por miembros de la UICN en la región con el objetivo de compartir estas experiencias en las reuniones preparatorias de la novena Conferencia de las Partes del CDB —la revisión del EE es uno de los temas principales de la agenda— y en el próximo Congreso de la Unión Mundial de la Naturaleza.

To take the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) conference forward, IUCN Pakistan organized a national conference on ESD in 2007, in collaboration with UNESCO. The workshop considered the linkages between ecology, economy and society with emphasis on learning from global best practices to take the sustainable development agenda forward, develop linkages with key partners and focus on required skills and processes to market sustainable lifestyles.
